Good roads enthusiasts met in con
vention at Umatilla on July 3rd to
discuss the proposed highway from
Lena down Butter creek to Echo and
finally on to Umatilla to the Columbia
River highway.
An organization was effected at
that time and Cyril G. Brownell was
elected permanent chairman. In or
der to get a more perfect working or
ganization, representatives to the di
rectorate were appointed from the
Umatilla road district, one from the
Hermlston road district, one from the
Echo road district, and two from
Morrow county to represent the up
per Butter creek country.
If the road should be put through,
there would be a highway from Hepp
ner all the way to Echo as the upper
rnd of the road would connect with
the Blue Trail at Lena and would
make a valuable link in the chain of
highways over this section. -
J. Perry Conder, farmer of the low
er Sand Hollow country, who has
been an ardent booster for the pro
posed highway, was present at the
meeting and gave valuable informa
tion as to conditions in Morrow
county as touched by the proposed
road and told of the sentiment he has
found among the people Interviewed
in Morrow county.
Another meeting will probably be
called in the near future, at the dis
cretion of Chairman Brownell.

tored To Portland Monday
An auto party of young folks left
Heppner Monday morning on a jour
ney to Portland. They were Alva
Jones and Earl Hallock and the
Misses Hanna and Isabel Wilson and
Miss Norah Hughes. The boys will
stop in Portland, where Mr. Hallock
will resume his work at the North
Portland stock yards, and Mr. Jones
will visit for a few days in the me
tropolis before returning home. The
young ladies will go on to the coast
for a vacation outing at one of the
beach resorts.

A family reunion ocurred at lone
last Sunday when Grandma Hale en
joyed the presence of her children
her grandchildren and great grand
children. Grandma Hale recently re
turned from a visit to North Yakima
and was accompanied home by her
daughter, Mrs. Harry Armitage. Mrs
Armltage visited for a few days at
ti e home of her sister, Mrs. Walter
Cason, returning Monday to North
Yakima.
Lexington Man Buys Portland Home,
Carl Marquardt, a north Lexington
wheat farmer who has met with
marked success In recent years, has
purchased a fine home at Park Rose,
near Portland. Mrs. Marquardt Is al
ready making her home there, Mr
Marquardt making an occasional visit.
He expects to leave the farm In
charge of his son Charlie in about
two years and retire to the city per
manently. In the place acquired by
Mr. Marquardt there is an acre of
ground, a large orchard and lots of
berry bushes. On a recent trip to
the city, Mr. Marquardt purchased a
Dodge car and he says that he and
his good wife are going to take life
easier during their declining years
With the new farm house and fine
big red barn, Mr. Marquardt's farm
stands out as one that is well kept
and a home of which anyone might
I well be proud.
