; on as a side line was an
enormui
undertaking and it is from this that
most of the criticism has arisen.
It is not entirely fair to judge tue
entire Association movement by tie
weaknesses of its canteen service or
by the shortcomings of its personnel
in France. It was necessary to re
cruit About 13,000 men and womea
from other walks of life, 50 of
these had never been members of an
Association at home. Most of the
criticism offered, by returning sol
diers are trivial In their nature aud
are repetitions, of stories told by
someone else..
The organization should not there
fore be judged, from this small per
centage of mistakes or mistreatment
of soldiers but should rather be
judged by its years of experience in.
America by the good work done In
the army camps, in. the United States
and by the outstanding constructive
side of its program, la France. Its
piimary work in France was to help
build both the morals and morale ol
the army. If we are to believe the
reports of General Pershing and
other commandisg officers, the or
ganization was successful In accom
plishing its task. The organization
is therefore still worthy oi the sup
port and confidence of the American
people. Its affairs at home are
directed by reputaWe men In their
community in the State and in the
nation. The movement to extend the
work in Oregon and Idaho which will
bring it closer to the boys and
young men in the small cities, vill
ages and rural communities is of
great importance and deserving of
the support of every one in our com
munity.
