THE Y. M. C. A. IT VTATCS.
The attacks upon the Y,nn;; Men's
Christian association av tailing flat.
They do not bear the soieh of cross
examination. Their genesis is chiefly
to be found in hearsay widerce, one
( i the most uncertain uf the in
litrumentalities of vituperation.
Courts refuse to regard it has having
place in the forum of Inr.iice.
The organization known to the
world as the Y. M. C. A., and to the
army as the Y, sent in ti-b neighbor
hood of 8000 men afcioaii. The
sudden and unexpected lulor thrown
upon it by the assumption of the gov
ernment canteen service, made it im
perative that secretaries be some
times selected in haste. Mistake
were made. Some men unfit for the
responsibilities were taken. Blunders
occured. There was now and thea
an isolated instance of dishonesty or
; f selfishness. There would be a few
black sheep in the midst ot 8004
lawyers, doctors, merchants, farm
ers, teachers, mechanics, however
carefully selected. It is not strange
that the Y had like experience.
Still it is slowly becoming under-'
stood that most of tho charges are
not true. Like the time-worn snow
ball which grows by rolling, one
fault has grown to a crime and into
a hundred mistakes. The one man
: who began the criticism has been
j multiplied by a . hundred hearsay
critics. When finally confronted
with demand for real evidence, Ui
j most cases it is not forthcoming,
j Perhaps one s-tory out of a hundred
j which have found circulation has
; been authenticated. Th others are
I simply the children of tbe prolific
Dame Rumor.
In the end the Y will gain by the
attacks made upon it Thti American
people believe in fair play, and in the
' long run truth will triumph. The
j organization did a magnificent, un
selfish work. Justice will finally be
accorded it. Pendleton Tribune.
