The big drive for the United War
Work activities will begin November
11th. Do not think that the pros
pects for peace make this drive un
necessary. If the fighting should
stop, It will be months before the
boys can be discharged.- During that
time there will be more need, if any
difference, than now for the work of
the United War Work organizations.
Every boy and every girl will want
to share In the work. The plan Is to
secure one million boys who will
pledge themselves to "earn and give"
at least $5.00 each to this work. The
girls will do all they can. Mauy of
the boys and girts will be able to give
more than $5.00, but many more
cannot do that much. Any amount
j will be accepted, and every contribu
tor will be enrolled as a member.
On account of the influenza public
meetings 'an not be held and per
sonal solicitation can not be made.
We want every patriotic boy and
girl to notify his or her teacher or

This gives you time in w'tlch to earn

To the older people I wish to say
Do all you can to encourage and
help the boys and girls in this drive.
See that every boy and girl in your
neighborhood knows about It. If
anything is not understood, write or
telephone the county chairman. In
the bright, days coming after the war
is over, when the boys come home,
the boys and girls who wear the
Victory buttons will he proud of
them and the part they took in this
drive. And the soldier boys will be
pleased to look into the faces of the
boys and girls who wear the Honor
Badge. Do not let any boy or girl in

OREGON FUEL NEWS.
Portland, Nov 4. To use wood
and save coal wherever possible be
becomes still more urgent in the face
of an estimated coal shortage of
14,000,000 tons of coal for winter.
The war is not over, and in the face
of decreased production due to
Spanish influenza and other causes,
and the vast 'war time fuel needs,
fuel conservation is more necessary
than ever.
Country communities are in pos
ition to help greatly coal conserva
tion by burning wood. It is esti
mated that farmers now use 83,000,
000 cords of fuel wood annually.
All farms should use it during the
war, especially in the Northwest
where it is so plentiful.
A call has been made upon the
coal mines of the Northwest to
supply South America with fuel
which has thus far been exported
from the Eastern mines. The East
ern mines have been prohibited from
exporting any more coal, which will
be diverted to other purposes where
it is so badly needed.
The daylight saving plan saved
1,250,000 tons of coal to the nation,
according to the U. S. fuel adminis
tration. This saving has been
mainly in Eastern cities. No exact
figures are available for Oregon, but
the amount saved is not noticeable,
One and one-half cords of Douglas
fir wood has the same heating value
as one ton of coal. In general, two
i pounds of wood equals one pound of
' coal In heat units.
I 'Keep the home warm but don't
forget that ventilation Is essential.
Pure air will heat much quicker than
foul air.
Make use of the dampers in regu
lating the furnace.
