' Regiment of Engineers
A DIFFERENT ENGINEER ORGANIZATION
Tills Regiment was formed December 14th, 1917, at Washington
Barracks, I). C, for the express purpose of supplying the various En
gineer I'nits of the IT. 8. Army with skilled mechanics and tochnic.
ally trained men.
HOW IT DIFFERS
Upon enlistment the skilled man Is sent through a training course de
signed to adapt his technical knowledge to military needs. This is
divided into two parts:
MILITARY That he may be able to defend himself, the recruit is
first taught the fundamentals of military science. Instruction
in the use of the rifle and bayonet is given until proficiency is
obtained. Strength and health are gained by a system of physi
cal exercise.
TKCHNICAL. The outstanding feature of the course is the training
given iu the Military Trade Schools. Here, under competent in
structors, the Engineer soldier learns how technical skill is ap
plied to the conduct of the war. He comes out of these Schools
ready to take an effective place in the Engineer Unit and to "de
liver the goods."

' Established 1831
Portland, Ore., June 18. More
sugar must be saved. This is the
3(iict of the Food Administration, and
those who are already curtailing
their use of sugar are asked to cut
down their consumption still further,
while those who have so far neglect
ed to make any material decrease in
their use of sugar are urged to face
the sugar situation squarely as loyal
citizens.
Federal Food Administrator W. B.
Ayer announced on June 13 that un
til further notice all retailers will Oe
required to limit their sales of sugar
for domestic purposes to two pounds
it a time in the city and to five
pounds at a time to rural customers,
this regulation not to apply to sugar
i'or domestic canning purposes, for
which provision lias been made so
hat housewives may obtain propei
supplies upon signing a certificate af
firming to the Government that she
vill not use any of the sugar so pur-
hased for any other purpose than
mining or preserving.
"This temporary restriction," said
Jr. Ayer in miking the announce
ment, "is necessary in order that tne
aiming and preserving requirements
if the country may be taken care of
and that waste of perishable fruits
may thus be prevented. I wish to
ay that I am advised from waslung
on that there is ample sugar in the
sugar-growing countries, and ample
sugar-refining capacity in the United
States. The whole difficulty lies in
the shortage of shipping facilities.
Undoubtedly there is more or less
loss occasioned by the activities of
the submarines. The extent of this
loss I do not know, but the country
may place the utmost reliance in Mr.
Hoover s statement that this domes-
ic conservation is most necessary.
The limit for domestic consumption
till remains at three pounds per
month per person but those who wish
to do their full share of service can
easily keep their consumption sub
stantially under this limit. I most
arnestly ask the serious attention of
every loyal Oregon family to this
very important matter of saving
uzar at this time, to the utmost.
Self-indulgence in the matter of can
dy-eating and indiscriminate con-
umption of sugar at the present time
is inexcusable and extremely unpa
triotic. Let us all save sugar as a
war service. Let us do it cheerfully
and be glad of the opportunity to
make this comparatively trivial sacrifice.

The Dishonor Men of Yale.
In the Yale senior class statistics
the kaiser received 11 votes in an-
wer to the question, Who is the
greatest man in the world? There are
11 Germans in the class.
We should like to see an announce
ment that there were 11 members of
the senior class at Yale who would
not receive their degrees at com
mencement. These 11 seniors should be the
brazen youths who insult their col;
lif e and the country In which they
' ave sought an education by pro
clming the murderer of Edith Ca
"cll and the destroyer of the Lusita-
a to be the greatest man in the
:id!
It will not do to whistle this Inci
dent down the wind as a matter of
no importance a mere ebullition of
the spirits on the part of thoughtless
college boys, signifying nothing but a
desire to seem smart.
The declaration deserves to be
dsa'.t with seriously. Seniors at Yale
today are no longer mere boys.
Scores and hundreds of Yale students
are rpnrpsentpfl hv stars unnn her
service flag. They are not too young '
to fight. So the 11 undergraduates
of the class of '18 who think the
kaiser is the greatest man in the
world can not be allowed to plead the
baby act as an excuse for their de
fiant declaration proclaiming admira
tion for the autocrat who would en
slave America if lie could. How long
would 11 American students remain
in the University of Berlin if they
ventured to record their opinion that
Woodrnw Wilson was the geatest
man in the world? indeed, we might
better ask, How long would they re
main above ground?
There is something more than a
mere vainglorious taint In this procla
mation of the German kaiser as the
world's superman at the very heart
of higher education in America. The
young apostles of kultur who thus
testify to their admiration for the
Hohenzollern of Potsdam want man
kind to see how safely Germans may
show their contempt for this country
even within the precincts of its gerat
est institutions of learning.
To confer the baccalaureate degree
upon such fellows as these 11 dis
honor men of Yale would be equiva
lent to a declaration that a good mor
al character is no longer of any con
sequence in a college education; for
any man, woman or child who can
possibly believe that William II. of
Germany is the greatest man in the
world is utterly devoid of moral per
ceptions. New York Sun.
