DEGREE OF HONOR.
Seattle, Wash., March 1st, 1918.
Chairman Heppner Chapter, Amer
ican Red Cross.
Dear Madam:
We are In receipt of your letter of
February 26. The directions which
we have sent out for socks are intend
ed to be a help and not a hindrance.
I do not know what directions you
have been using heretofore. Socks
should be of a soft, rather loose tex
ture such as is obtained when thirty
stitches measures four and one half
inches as Is described in the first par
agraph of our last sock directions.
The leg should be about four and a
half inches all the way down, and ten
and a half to eleven inches long. The
heel may be either the strap heel or
the angular heel. The heel should
not be made so long that the sock is
too wide through the instep. The
foot should be the same width as the
leg or a little less and should measure
when finished eleven Inches. A sli
ght variation in length Is all right.
The new directions for the Kitchener
toe aim at exactly the same thing as
the old ones and anyone may follow
whichever he choses. The thread to
make the Kitchener toe can go just
one way no matter how It is describ
ed. Thanking you for your coopera
tion, we remain,
Very truly yours,
MRS. JOHN H. POWELL.
Superintendent Miscellaneous Department.

The Gazette-Times
Makes Clubbing Arrangement With
The Oregon Farmer
Offers Unusal Opportunity to its Readers
AMONG our large circle of readers
there are a great many who are in
terested directly and indirectly in
fruit growing, dairying and other
branches of farming. All of these
naturally wish to keep in close touch with
agricultural activities throughout the
stale; and to know about any fight which is
being waged for the measures Oregon far
mors want and against all sorts of schemes
that are detrimental to the people and ag
ricultural interests of this state.
We have, therefore, made a special club
bing arrangement with TIIK OKKOON
FARMER whereby any farmer or fruit
grower, who is one of -our regular subscri
bers and who is not now a subscriber to
THE OHKdOX FARMER, will be entitled
to receive THE OREGON FARMER in
combination with this paper at the same
rate as for this paper alone.
This oer applies to all those who renew or
extend their subscriptions as well as to all
new subscribers. If you are interested di
rectly or indirectly in Oregon agriculture,
do not miss this unusual opportunity, but
send your order in now.
THE OREGON FARMER is the one farm
paper which is devoting itself exclusively
to the farming activities and interests of
Oregon. It has a big organization gath
ering the news of importance to farmers,
dairymen, fruitgrowers, stockraisers and
poultrymen; and it has the backbone to at
tack wrongful methods and combinations
and bad legislation, and support honest lea
ders ami beneficial measures. AVe are con
fident that our readers will congratulate us
on our being able to make this splendid and .
attractive clubbirg offer.

An engine that translates gas
into a new kind of thrilling
power through the "Hot-Spot",
and "Ram's-Horn" .Manifold-
Chalmers devices
fTi'ft -sS3fe I
jgjSMS fe3iS txfegas "
Power to take a hill, and power to pass the other fellow
, are still claimed by many car makers; but here's a car that
puts such expressions into the dark ages of automobiling.
It is the current Chalmers, equipped with the famous
"Hot-Spot" and "Ram's-Horn" Manifold, which wrings from
gas more power than was ever taken out of gas before.
But not merely brutal power (for that it has), but a
newer kind, a softness of power that is as thrilling to bear
witness to as the technique of a great musician.
Accomplished how? By those two great devices: a "Hot
Spot", which fairly cooks the gas, then "cracks it up fine as a
powder", and the "Ram's-Horn" Manifold which "sets it
down" in the combustion chambers with celerity and with
out disturbance.
So that when the spark touches it off, it gives nothing
but power; soft, harnessed, controlled power that you will
never forget once you have had its feel.
