PLENA BUT WISELY
In our zeal to do onr best and to
follow the request of those responsi
ble for the food supplies of our na
tion we are often led into a misun
derstanding of the real value of good
suggestions. Eat plenty, but wisely
and without waste, is a catchy saying
that has not been quoted enough and
if followed will lead to true Hoover
izlng. According to Miss Grace Jphnson
of O. A. C. the term "conservation"
means neither starvation the man's
Idea, nor economy as often stated
by women. It means that with a lit
tle thought one or two splonsful of
sugar in a cup of coffee, if carefully
stirred will make that drink just as
sweet as three or four that are not
stirred, but remain undissolved In the
bottom of thee up. For many of us
it will mean substituting more veg
etables in the place of a diet consis
ting of mostly meat and bread. We
are not expected to do a full days
work with half a'days meals but we
should take some thought for our
own health as well as the needs of the
nation especially where helping one
helps the other.

Woman Would Take Her. Place As
Farm Manager.
A woman of Oregon would do her
bit by taking full management of an
Eaftern Oregon farm. Her name is
Mrs. Mary Willis and her present
home is St. Johns, Ore.
In a letter to the GazetteTlmes
she says:
Dear Sir:
Be so kind as to send me a
copy of your paper, as I wish to lo
cate to your county, if I can find a
Dosition. I was raised on a farm and
would like to manage a sheep or stock
ranch, as I believe a middle aged wo
man is more careful than yonnger
men. My only son is in the army and
I must needs make a living. Please
let me know of some elderly men
who wish to retire from active mana
elne of their ranches. I am a member
of the Rebekah Lodge and can give
best references. Am fond of out
door work and a very careful woman
of middle age.
Mrs. Willis gives her address as
512 Tyler St., St Johns, Portland,
Ore.

Former Heppner Physician Wins
. Medical Commission.
Dr. Chester A. Downs, who was as
sociated with Dr. A. D. McMurdo in
this city last summer, has won his
commission as first lieutenant in the
United States Army medical reserve
corps. Dr. Downs has already left
Portland for Los Angeles, whore he
will enter the war surgery station.
He expects to be assigned to duty In
the orthopedic division of the medical
corps.
Dr. Downs Is a graduate of the Uni
versity ot Oregon and of John Hop-
George Herbert Betts, author of
"The Mind and Its Educator," said:
"When education was looked on as a
matter of mere culture, or of disci
pline of the mind, it did not matter
; so much what was studied. But since
i we have come to see that education
is directly and immediately related to
success in the concrete affairs of life,
ft has become evident that thes chool
must present such matter for the
child to study as will give hjm the
training needed in these cincrete af
fairs. -Under the newer ideal for educa
tion we are coming to see that men
tal discipline is directly related to
the amount of Interest and effort
which the pupil himself puts into the
study, and that it has no meaning ex
cept as it applies tot he actual affairs
In which he sets his powers at work."
Through the Industrial Club work,
the pupil can apply what he learns In
school to his everyday affairs In life,
and so It has come to stay and I hope
In time It will be a part ot the school
curriculum.
Through It the child develops a
spirit ot cooperation and civic pride.
The social nature of its members is
cultivated. System, thrift, economy
and leadership are developed by It.
Training in the method of conduct
ing public meetings, in standing be
fore an audience, and In giving ex
pression to the individuals thought,
Is worth much to the child and Is al
so attained through club work.
In answer to the Inquiry, "what Is
Club work," will say: It is the perfor
mance of a definite enterprise, baaed
on sound principles, and supported
by federal and state aid. This year
it has been put on a war basis and
every boy and girl in the state has
been asked to do some phase of the
work. Take up some project and fol
low It through to completenetss.
Its motto Is: "Make the Better
Best." Its emblem: The four leafed
clover with the fourH's represent
ing, the head, the heart, the hand and
the health. -', "
Boys and girls think this over and
decide to do your bit and if discoura
ged read the following poem, and It
will help you to "Try, try again."
Thinking.
If you think you're beaten, you are;
If you think you dare nit, you don't;
It you like to win but you think you
can't, i
It's almost a. cinch you won't.
If you think you'll lose, you're Jost,
For out in the world we find,
Success begins with a fellows will;
It's all in the state of mind.
If you think you're outclassed, you
are;
You've got to think big to rise;
You've got to be sure of yourself,
fore ,
You can ever win a prize.
Life's battles den't always go
To the stronger or faster man,
But soon or late the man who wins
Is the one who thinks he can.
