Emily Stevens, star of Metro's
special production de luxe, "The
Slacker," written and directed by'
William Christie Cabanne, is mount
ing steadily higher In the artistic
firmament. There is not on the
American stage a young woman of
more brilliant achievements, or great
er promise for the future. And "The
Slacker" places her at the tenith of
her powers.
It Is fitting that Miss Stevens
should be chosen to play the leading
role in this superb photodrama of
patriotism, for she comes of fine old
American stock. Emily Stevens Is a
niece of Mrs. Flske, the celebrated
actress, and the daughter of Robert'
E. Stevens and Emma Maddern, also !
prominent players. She made her
debut on the speaking stage with Mrs.
Flske, playing the part of a maid In
Becky Sharp," and she remained In
her aunt's' company several years,
playing and studying stage technique.
After winning praise in "Leah
Kleschna," she was given the leading
feminine role in "The Devil," with
George Arliss. Later she appeared
in William Locke's "Septimus." She
starred in'The Unchastened Woman"
in 1915 and 1916, and the early part
of 1917, then appearing on Broadway
in John Galsworthy's magnificent
drama, "The Fugitive."
This star, however, has come to the
full realization of her powers in her
motion picture work. She has never
appeared for any other company than
Metro Pictures Corporation, and for
that progressive firm has starred in
Albert Bowker made a trip to Ar
lington last week to receive some new
Ford cars which had already been dis
posed of to Morrow county people.
Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Sims have ta
ken up their residence in the Reid
house on Water street. They receiv
ed a visit during the past week from
Mr. Sims' brother Henry, who travels
for a commission house in Butte,
Montana. While here, the younger
Sims bought up a large number of
turkeys which will be placed on the
Butte market.

A Telephone Message From
Santa Claus
Hello! Central. Give me Santa Claus, please." (Pleasant voice.) "There you
are." "Is that you, Santa Claus!" "He speaking. What is itt And please talk
fast for I'm a busy man." "Listen, Santa. I'm Mr. Legion, and I'm up against a
proposition. I've spent days and days trying to think up a suitable Christmas gift
for each member of my family and I'm no nearer a solution of the problem than I was
months ago. Christmas will soon be here and I don't know what to do. Can't you help
me out with a suggestion?"
"Customs are constantly changing, Mr. Legion. The small individual Christmas
present has practically had its day. Many families are now pooling their Chrietmas
money in order to get something worth while that will directly benefit and please all
members of the family alike.
THE NEW EDISON
"THE PHONOGRAPH WITH A SOUL"
is a most ideal Christmas gift one that will bring joy not only to the whole family,
but to your friends as well. Not only through the Holiday season will it entertain,
but through the long winter evenings and throughout the entire year it will stand for
countless happy hours delightfully spent listening to the world's greatest music from
the world's most famous artists. Furthermore, now is the opportune time to buy the
New Edison, as owing to the probability of freight embargoes and other unforseen
contingencies the price of the New Edison, "The Phonograph with a Soul," will be
materially advanced January 1st. I advise you to buy now. Wishing you and yours
a Merry Christmas, Good-by!" "Just a minute, Santa. A thousand thanks! and
where is the best place to get the New Edison, "The Phonograph with a Soul'?"
"In your own home town, from my representative."
