An Engine That Digests:
Low-Grade Gas and Makes
High Power Out of It
The thing about the great Chalmers engine that
counts is the fact that it actually digests the. gas fed to
it (and low-grade gas especially).
Everyone knows now that the grade of gasoline
'is on the decline, and that probably high-grade gas, or
even, the gas of a year ago, will never come back.
And like a man who has been on a high-grade diet and
is suddenly given a low-grade diet, many engines
in automobiles now have gasoline indigestion.
The Chalmers engine digests gas probably as no
engine ever before has done. It makes high power
out of low-grade gas. ,
It makes gasoline work harder than gasoline ever
worked before.
Anyone who knows anything about an engine
knows that the everlasting riddle has been to get the
gas in just exactly a 100 condition of vapor in the
combustion chamber before ignition.
The great Chalmers engine has accomplished this,
so far as any engine probably ever will be able to do,
by means of two clever devices.
One is a "hot spot" feature which heats and "breaks
up" the gas after it eaves the carburetor and before it
gets to the intake manifold. The other is the "ram s
horn" manifold that, by means of its "easy air
bends," sends the gas to the combustion chamber
well-nigh perfect.
' Hence, morepower out of less gas.
On a cold day remarkably quick results in starting
are obtained.
No longer a 10-minute fight with your engine. And
as soon as the Chalmers engine starts it runs smoothly
and delivers power quickly.
Often cars take ten minutes of running to "warm
them up."
But not so with the current Chalmers.
And if you weren't a shrewd judge of an automo-,
bile, you might overlook some of the other notable
features of the current Chalmers, so great has become,
the achievements of its engine.
Go down to our salesroom and let us show you the
great Chalmers engine and the perfection of the current
Chalmers.

AQENTS, HEPPNER
S. E. Notson, of this city, makes
public a request received from Rich
ard M. Hurd, Chairman of the Board
of Trustees of the American Defense
Society, urging citizens here to organ
ize a local vigilance corps, for the
purpose of aiding the Government in
putting an end to German propagan
da and enemy activity which has been
responsible for fires, ammunition
plant explosions, sabotage, food
scares and other attempts to damage
the morale of the American people.
"Recent events in this country
make it plain that the German meth
od of propaganda which has been so
effective in Russia and Italy is now
being attempted in this country with
an alarming degree of success," ac
cording to the appeal to Americans
now being Issued by .the American
Defense Society, "German propagan
da nas long been supplied to our
troops in the national encampments.
The ship-building program is being
Interfered with by German-inspired
strikes. Germans aro directing the
hoarding of food supplies to an ex
tent 'that panics have already been
prevalent In the leading cities. News
papers are giving daily reports of fires
In ammunition plants and grain de
pots and the country is now on the
verge of an even greater calamity in
the shape of a railroad strike of un
precedented extent which threatens
to cripple our national Industry."
The far-reaching need of the local
Vigilance Corps can readily be seen
when it Is known that in this country
alone there are today several million
alien enemies represnting Germany,
Austria, Bulgaria, Turkey and other
countries sympathetic or allied with
the Prussian autocracy. Almost
without exception these enemies are
tree to go about as they see fit, and
while the Government has done much
toward tightening the censorship of
malls and cables, nevertheless there
are numberless channels by which
thee enemies are in touch with the
directing genius of German propagan
da in Berlin.
It Americans mean to stand by the
men at the front, whose lives are al
ready being sacrificed, and to stand
by their Government, the opportunity
Is 'offered In the additional service
they can give to this work of the Am
erican Defense Society.
The plan of organization under
taken by the Society and recommend
ed to loyal Americans provides for
the enrollment of a small American
Vigilance Corps in every city and
town which shall classify all residents
under the following terms:
1. Loyal.
2. Disloyal.
3. Doubtful.
4. Unknown.
Following the general classify
tlon of citizens the Committee is ur
ged to make further designation of
the following list:
1. Alien enemy.
2. Pro-German.
3. Anti-Government.
In the letter of instructions to
branch organizations the Executive
Committee of the American Defense
Society gives the following direc
tions:
"At the earliest possible moment
when you have made your classifica
tion of alien enemies, pro-Germans
and those opposed to the Government
In this war, send this list to the Po
lice Department, the local represent
ative of the Department of Justice
and to whatever representatives of
the army or navy intelligence bureaus
there are in your community. Do not
let this matter rest, however, with the
first classfication of the enemies. Too
much stress cannot be put on the lm
portance of having your own Vigil
ance Corps take steps to watch alien
enemies, pro-Germans and those op
posed to the Government. Only by
such co-operation will you be able to
give effective aid to the Government
Take every means you can to let the
people of your city know the names of
our enemies."
Unofficial announcement has al
ready been made at Washington that
the Government is about to register
the alien enemies in America. Your
Committee already having acted a-
long such lines, will naturally be in a
position greatly to aid the Govern
ment Census when such a census is
taken. No doubt many attempts will
be made to evade the official Govern
ment Census and information on the
enemies In your community will
therefore be of the greatest value."
"You are enjoined to watch the
speech, associations and activities of
every man whom you may suspect of
disloyalty and to send in an immed
iate report. For further information
and instructions regarding the work
of the Vlgilence Corps of the Amer
ican Defense Society address Nation
