Saw Mill Men Wanted.
The Government Is, very desirous
of enlisting practical sawmill men
and loggers for the 20th Engineers,
especially those who have had exper
ience in small mills. Sawyers, set
ters, doggers, edgermen, steam engin
eers, firemen, auto truck drivers and
every kind of experienced loggers. In
eluding teamsters are wanted. Appli
cations for enlistment in the 20th En
gineers, for any of the above posi
tions may be made to the Forest Su
pervisor, Federal Building, Pendleon,
Oregon.
Chas. Royse came over from Spray
on Monday and spent a few days in
Heppner. Mr. Royse is contemplat
ing going Into the cattle business on
a more extensive scale for the win
ter, providing he can secure the extra
feed necessary to maintain them, and
it was to look up feed and pasturage
in this vicinity that Mr. Royse made
a visit here at this time. Chas. is

all between the ages of 21 and 30
years, inclusive, pay careful heed to
the changes that have been ordered
by the government In the method of
selecting men for military service,
These changes affect every man
subject to the draft, without excep
tion.
The new plan goes into effect on
December 15. But on December 1
preparations for putting it into ef
fect will begin all over the United
States.
At that time all exemptions or dis
charges from military service under
the draft will automatically be can
celled.
Exemptions hereafter will be based
on an improved system whereby the
Government will have exact know
tedge of every registered man and his
affairs.
The basic principal of the new sys
tern is that those men are to be taken
first who have no persons dependent
on them.
Under this classification come sin
gle men, married men whose wives
support them, married men who have
habitually failed to support their
families, or whose families are inde
pendent of them for support.
Men In this class will be subject

persons other than their wives or

on them for support, as well as those
whose work is necessary to industries
essential to the war. Including agri
culture, will be listed in other classes.
There will be five classes In all.
The effect of classification In class
es below Class 1 will be to grant a
temporary discharge from the draft,
for men In these classes will not be
railed until the class or classes above
theirs has been exhausted.
But before this system can be put
Into effect, information must be
gathered on which to make the class
ification of each man.
To obtain this information, and to
compile it afterward, the Government
has prepared books called Question
naires. The Questionnaires contain " ques
tions covering every phase of a man's
occupation, his income, that of per
sons he claims to be dependent on '
him, his family relations, his bus!-,
ness, his health. j
Each registered man must answer;
one of these Questionnaires In full, i
A Questionnaire will be mailed by
the local board to each registered
man directed to the address on his,
registration card or as that address:
may be changed by notice of change
of address filed therewith, within the
next two or three weeks.
He will have seven days in which
to make the required answers, and re
turn the Questionnaire to the board.
Failure to answer will automat
ically cancel his rights to exemption
and will put him in Class 1.
In order fully to protect the rights
of every registered man, and to help j

yers will be at the headquarters of
the board to advise and assist him
without charge.

Flowers Abolished; Man Complains
He Cannot Supply His rigs on
Waste Materials.
University of Oregon, Eugene, Nov.
19. The students of the University
have taken the economy idea firmly
by the horns and have begun to "do
the job up proper," if reports may be
believed. Many ways they have found
to save the five, ten and twenty-five
cent pieces.
One of the latest Ideas for economy
to appear on the campus is the abol
ishing of the yellow crysanthemum,
which up to the present time has al
ways been the traditional flower of
the Oregon co-ed at the big games ot
the year. This semester the women
have cooperated with the local Y. W.
C. A. In their endeavor to cut down
waste, and have decided to do away
with all appearances of the tradition
al yellow flower.
At the annual homecoming dance
this year, at which time the old grad
uates are welcomed back to the Uni
versity, all extra expense has been
done away with, and the necessary
expenditures have been cut down to
the smallest possible margin. No
taxis, no dress suits for the men, no
flowers for the girls, no extra cost of
any kind will be made.
The fraternity houses have nearly
all declared a strict economy In all
details. Many of them have cut down
their expenses so much that even the
garbage men are complaining. The
Kappa Sigma fraternity Is reported
to have made a contract with a local
garbage man to have him furnish po
tatoes for the year In exchange for
their kitchen refuse. The potatoes
were supplied, and now the man Is
complaining that there is not enough
garbage to make up for the price of
his potatoes which he furnished the'
house at the beginning of the year.
The freshmen bonfire, which start-1
ed the annual rally before the game
November 17, was limited to 16 feet
in height. Only old wood and boxes
which could no longer be used were
employed in the construction ot the
fire.
The whole University has entered
Into the general spirit of the Hoover
Izing movement, it seems, and is
economizing In every detail.
Sale Gratifying Success.
Auctioneer McMenamln, who con
ducted the sale on Saturday last at
tho Hanshew place in Blackhorse, re
ports that it was a gratifying success,
and much more money was realized
for the stuff than had been asked
for It at private sale. Nearly every
article and all the stock brought good
prices. He states that the people
were slow in getting started on the
bidding in a good many Instances but
they stayed on the job and but a few
articles had to go at a sacrifice. The
Holt combine went for $250, the only
bid that the auctioneer was able to
get. Evidently that kind of a ma
chine did not appeal to the farmers
assembled there and the man that
bought it just about paid for the
reach. This part of the equipment
was in splendid condition and some
thing that can be readily utilized in
drawing a combine. Mr. McMena
mln states that he Is open for en
gagement In conducting other sales.
John Nolnu was up to Heppner
Monday from his farm west of lone.
John thinks he will have to be going
off to war before long and says that
he Is making the necessary prepara
tions. He reports having raised a
fairly good crop the past season.
W. P. McMillan, Lexington wheat
buyer, was in Heppner Saturday.
