L. E. Friedley, who farms exten
sively in the Lexington country was a
visitor in Heppner Saturday and took
in the lecture on smut by J. C. Hawkins.
J. D. Bauman, present owner of the
Borg ranch near Lexington, was in
Heppner Saturday and took in the
preaching of Mr. Hawkins on smut.
Uncle George Dykstra was in town
Saturday from his farm in the foothills.
Win. Floreon was down from his
Willow creek ranch on Saturday.
Miss Cora Mae Crawford visited
for a few days with some of her girl
friends in lone, taking advantage of
the school vacation.
Dock Brown was over from Condon
on Monday to attend the funeral of
his old friend and neighbor, George
Perry.
Marion Evans, ex-sheriff of Morrow
county was ud from his Willow creek
farm Saturday for a short time.
E. O. Haverstlck who farms the
Adkins place on Rhea creek, was a
Heppner business visitor Saturday.
The treasury department, through
the internal revenue service at Port
land, Ore., has made public the fol
lowing list of articles taxable on and
after October 4. i
The war revenue fill of October 3,
1917, effective on Jmi after October
4, 1917, imposes taxes as follows:
Three per cent on all articles here
inafter set forth, sold by manufac
turers, producers or Importers on and
after October 4, 1917.
The tax also applies to all the ar
ticles hereinafter set forth held and
intended tor sale by Jobbers
wholesalers who are not manufactur
ers, producers or importers.
Every jobber and wholesaler Is re
quired to make Inventories of all such
articles as of October 4th, and to file
returns within thirty days after such
date, which inventory will in due
course be verified bja revenue offi
cer: '
B. Chewing gum or substitute
therefore, perfumes, essences, ex
tracts, toilet waters, cosmetics, pe
troleum jellies, hair oils, pomades.
hair dressings, hair restorers, hair
dyes, tooth and mouth washes, denti
frices, tooth pastes, aromatic cachous,
toilet soaps or powders, or any sim
ilar substance, article or preparation,
by whatever name known or distin
guished, to be used or applied for
toilet purposes.

ever, the manufacturer or producer
of which claims to have any private
formula, secret or occult art for mak
ing or preparing same, or has claims
to have any exclustve right or title to
making or preparing same, or which
are prepared, uttered, vended or ex
posed for sale under any letters pat
ent or trade mark, etc.
Three per cent on all automobiles,
automobile trucks, automobile wa
gons and motor cycles.
On all piano players, graphaphones
phonographs, talking machines and
records for the same.
On all cameras, tennis rackets, golf
clubs, baseball bats, lacrosse sticks,
balls of all kinds including baseballs,
footballs, tennis balls, golf balls, la
crosse balls, billiard and pool balls,
fishing- rods and reels, billiard and
pool tables, chess and checker
boards and pieces, dice, games and
parts of games, except playing cards
and children's tops and games.
A record should be kept showing
the exact quantity of each article sold
and sucn record will in due course
be verified by a revenue officer.
Prepared syrups or extracts, sold
by manufacturers, producers or Im
porters: For not more than $1.30 per gal
lon, tax, 6c per gallon.
More than $1.30 and not more than
$2.00, tax, 8c per gallon.
More than $3 and not more than
$3, tax, 10c per gallon.
More than $3 and not more than
$4, tax, 15c per gallon.

CRESTON LEATHERS
Chester Leathers, son of Mr. and
Mrs. E. M. Leathers, of Hardman,
died at John Day, Oregon, Oct. 11.
Funeral services were conducted at
the I. O. O. F. hall in HaVdman on
Saturday last and the remains were
laid to rest in the cemetery west of
Hardman, Turner B. MacDonald, pas
tor of the Church of Christ at Hepp
ner, officiating.
i Creston was an unusually manly
little fellow and the idol of his pu
ents as well as of his many acquain
tances. The funeral was largely at
tended and the love of the community
toward him was plainly manifested in
the many floral offerings and express
ions of genuine sorrow. He was born
at Lone Rock, Oregon, on May 24
1912, and was aged 5 years, 4 months
and 17 days at the time of his death.
The afflicted parents have the sympa
thy of the entire community.
W. B. Jenks of Monument was a
visitor in Heppner the first of the
week.
