The Kid, a sprightly Miss of seven
teen, Is overjoyed at receiving an
appointment on the staff of the New
York Herald, through the Influence
of Joe Hazard, the star reporter, who
has brought her up as his daughter.
To arm her properly for the battle of
! life, Joe tells her the story of how
her mother's downfall was brought
! about. Her mother, he tells her, was
i betrayed by a man named Dunster
' in her home town. Joe bad befrlend
t ed her and when her child (The Kid)
was born, and the mother died, Joe
i had decided to bring tho child up
' himself. With a final warning to
beware the pitfalls of the great city,
Joe takes her to the Herald office to
begin her career.
Soon after, when the price of meat
shows an alarming rise, the Herald
assigns the Kid to unearth the cause,
and thus save the lives of the count
less children of the slums whose par
ents would have been vnable to pur
chase meat at the increased price.
While on the hunt for particulars,
the Kid sees Robinson, one of the
large cattle owners of the West who
has come to the city for a business
trip. She follows him, waits while
he has his shoes shined and then,
when turning a corner, loses him in
the crowd. Hurrying home, she as
sumes the disguise of a bootblack
and obtains a position at tho stand
where she had left Robinson. True
to her expectations, Robinson ap
pears that day, and while shining his
shoes she hits on a clue. That day,
Robinson 's wife, a charity worker, is
murdered while riding in her car, ami
the murderer makes goou his escape.
Sometime later, the Kid manages to
i.ntaln a position in the offio5 of Eob

lieves him not only connected with
the manipulation of the meat market,
but nlso with the murder of his wife.
She arranged to have two detectives
planted in tho room next day to get
further evllence of his connection
with the murder, but they overhear a
conversation which convinces them
that Hlldalgo, manager of Robinson's
cattle enterprises is the real murder
er and he is taken into custody. The
Kid also Bwears out a warrant for
Robinson for his connection with the
rise in meat but Joe Hazard, seeing
and recognizing Robinson, tells the
Kid that he is her own father, Dun
ster, under an assumed name. Dun
ster also learns that the Kid is his
daughter and begs leniency. She
Anally secures his freedom after ex
acting a promise from him to devote
a portion of the money he has un
lawfully gained to charity, but when
he comes to claim a daughter's love,
she turns to one who has been her
"daddy" for all these years and leaves
Dunster a broken-hearted man, Sun
day and Monday at the Star Theatre.
Coming to Star Theater Friday
and Saturday is "The Saintly Sin
ner," another Bluebird photoplay.
The excellent reputation this series
of picture dramas has. established
will be cleverly maintained in the
new attraction. "The Saintly Sin
ner" will be a play out of the ordi
nary,' based upon uncommon theories
and worked out with well sustained
interest to the very end. Ruth Stone
house, who will be pleasurbly recall
ed as the star of "Love Never Dies,"
an earlier Bluebird, will be the hero
ine of the story with Jack Mulhall
appearing as her leading man. Very
sensational and exciting will be the
episodes in the "Saintly Sinner" and
screen fans who like excitement to
attend their hour at the theater will
be abundantly supplied with thrills
In the rapid action and surprises the
play affords.
Old Timer Makes Visit.
- Among the many old time resi
dents of Morrow county who were
here to attend the fair was W. H.
Hayes of Pendleton. Mr. Hayes is
now farming in the Umatilla wheat
section and is meeting with success.
At the present time he has nine thou
sand sacks of wheat in the ware
house awaiting sale. Mr. Hayes
came over primarily to put through
a deal for a wheat ranch in the Black
Horse country. If successful in the
transaction, he will place his son
Robert on the ranch. Mr. Hayes
lived in Morrow county about twenty-three
years ago, owning a ranch
on upper Hinton creek, which he sold
to D. Cox.
J. H. Estes and M. J. Estes were
registered at the Palace hotel last
Thursday from "Let'er Buck."

Says the Echo News: Charles Bar
tholomew is going to have a fine
country house on his Butter creek
ranch, built of stone. The material
for the building will be quarried from
a deposit of stone on the ranch.
Mrs. Mary Bartholomew returned
this week from a visit to her son, E.
E. Bartholomew. Mr. Bartholomew
now resides at Bingen, Wash, having
just recently moved there from Glen-wood.
