C. K. Spaulding Back of Proposition
to Establish New Industry
at Capital.
C. K. Spaulding, president of the
logging company which bears his
name, is planning to organize a com
pany to engage in the paper making
industry at Salem. Recently he con
ferred with San Francisco capitalists
who are heavily interested in Crown
Willamette Paper company, operat
ing mills at Lebanon, Oregon City
and Camas and , completing a new
plant at Ocean Falls, B. C. , He feels
encouraged sufficiently to carry for
ward the preliminaries of his pro
ject. "The three requisites of raw ma
terials, power and transportation we
have at Salem," said Mr. Spaulding
at his company's Portland office.
"There is no reason why pulp paper
cannot be produced as advantageous
ly there as anywhere on the Pacific
Coast. We shall be glad to turn in
our steam power facilities and water
power rights for stock in a corpora
tion that might be formed to engage
in the industry. Already there is
abundant cheap electric power at Sa
lem and if more should be required
it can be developed within easy trans
mission distance."
It Is known that the International
Paper company, capitalized at 260,
000,000 in stock and bonds and op
erating extensively in the New Eng
land states, has taken options on
large tracts of spruce and hemlock in
Coos county and the western part ot
Douglas and Lane counties with a
view to engaging in the paper mak
ing industry on the Pacific Coast.
Another indication of the approach
ing boom in this ndustry s the act
ivity of representatives of large in
terests n the Grays Harbor district
to install a pulp mill close to Aber
deen. ,
Whether these interests are th In
ternational Paper company or allied
with the New York corporation is
not positivly known, but, in the op
inion of Portland men who are keep
ing in close touch with the situation,
there are no conflicting interests
among those who are seeking to add
to the Importance of the paper mak
ing industry based on the forest pro
ducts of Oregon, Washington and
British Columbia. An unchallenged
fact is said to be that Eastern paper
manufacturers see the necessity of
developing the Industry on the Paci
fic Coast because of the gradual ex
tinction of raw materials in the New
England states and Eastern Canada.

Miss Gonzalez, like the majority
of California girls, likes the open and
spends most of her time In the saddle
or at the helm of a fast-flying sail
boat. While riding and sailing are
her chief diversions, she is proficient
at tennis, is an exceptional basketball
player and can shoot like a hunter.
For just simple exercise she takes
lonk walks that sometimes carry her
far afield.
Myrtle Gonzalez will appear at the
Star Theatre next Sunday and Mon
day in "The Chalice of Courage." A
good comedy reel will also be shown.
Myrtle Gonzalez Considers "The
Chalice of Courage" Greatest
Photoplay.
Myrtle Lillian Gonzalez, of the
Western Vit'igraph Company, who
has been sec-n in a number of big
Vitagraph feature productions, places
"The Chalice of Courage," Cyrus
Townsend Brady's remarkable human
interest story, in the front rank of
the feature pictures in which she has
appeared. She was born in Los An
geles, Calif., on Sept. 28th, 1894, and
is of Spanish-Irish extraction. Her
father, Manuel Gorge Gonzalez, was
also born in Los Angeles and can
trace his ancestors from the Court of
early Spain. Miss poazalez' mother
was christened Lillian Cooke and
was born in New York City, her an
cestors coming from Cooke Castle,
Ireland.
Miss Gonzalez was educated in a
convent at Los Angeles, where, in
addition to her other studies, she
took up music, art and the languages,
obtaining her degree in each of the
three. After finishing her education
she engaged in concert work and was
making excellent progress when she
attracted the attention of Dick Fer
ris, who engaged her for his stock
company, then playing the Auditor
ium, Los Angeles, Calif. The cease
less labor of a stock engagement did
not appeal to her and, at the sugges
tion of Paul De Longpre, an artist
of reputation, she applied for and se
cured a position with the Vitagraph
Company. The silent drama did ap
peal to her sense of the "fitness of
things," and she adopted the calling
that best fitted her talent, posing for
the plcturized stories,
Miss Gonzalez has, now acted be
fore the camera for some time and
