Owing to the car shortage, many
of the smaller towns in the Northwest
are facing a coal famine which may
assume serious proportions before the
winter is over, unless something is
done that will relieve the situation.
Condon and lone are two towns near
at hand that have already begun to
feel a depressed effect from this
source.
Ed Buckman returned this week
from Lexington where he recently
completed the plaster work on the in
terior of the new W. F. Barnett &
Co. store building. He will go out
this week to the A. W. Dykstra farm
where he will put the finishing
touches to the interior of Mr. Dyks
tra's new house.
Walter Becket was in the city from
Eight Mile Tuesday. Like the ma
jority of the farmers of that section
he has been unable 10 sow any grain
this fall, owing to the lateness of the
season and unfavorable weather con
ditions. Mr. Becket is of the opinion
that we will have another good year
for Spring grain.
Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Tucker of
Black Horse were Heppner visitors
'his week. Mr. Tucker raised a
'lumper crop this year, his wheat
nakhig an average yield of thirty
usheis. He predicts another big
rop for 1917, as he says general cbn
litions were never more favorable.
