IHE BEST FROM JUDGE
Unconscious Joker.
What the case was about no one
seemed to know exactly. The lawyers
themselves were pretty well mixed
up.
Then an important witness entered
the box and was presently asked to
tell the court the total of his gross
income.
He refused; the counsel appealed
to the judge.
"You must answer the question,"
said the judge sternly.
The witness fidgeted about and
then burst out with:
"But But, your honor, I have no
gross Income. I'm a fisherman, and
it's all net." Pittsburg Chronicle

HENRY SCHWARZ, Proprietor
Levi Shaner came in from Snokane
Thursday evening. He and W. J.
Shaner have located an ODal mine
over in the Blue Mountains, about
thirty miles from Heppner and 12
miles from Hardman. The stone is
of the finest quality and will take a
great polish. He thinks there Is Quite
a quantity of it there. He sold one
small polished stone for $10. The
reporter was shown some of the sam
ples and they were beautiful gems
indeed.
Not a ripple disturbs the equan
imity of Heppner, not a "josh" or a
horse laugh is heard. Tom Morgan
has gone to Burns.
Last Friday, Gilliam county road
viewers were at work looking over a
proposed road from Condon to the
head of Dry Fork, Intersecting the
Heppner road at that place. The
people of Dry Fork want a postofflce,
and are willing to join the citizens
of Lone Rock in a petition for a mail
route direct from Heppner. This will
prove a great convenience to Hepp
ner, Condon and all intermediate
points.

And Then She Blushed.
A party of strangers were visiting
at the college. It was in the late
fall and the air was crisp and cold.
One of the members of the party, a
charming young woman, was escorted
through the grounds by a learned but
very much preoccupied professor
Suddenly two members of the track
team, accoutred for their sport,
passed them.
"It's dreadfully cold," remarked
the young woman, with a dainty shiv
er, as she gazed after the runners,
"to be without stockings."
The professor's mind, deep in con
templation of the fourth dimension,
was attracted by the sound of the
girl's voice.
"Then why," he asked absently,
"did you leave them off?" Youth's
