This office has Just received an
excellent map of the State of Oregon
showing the State's great timber re
sources. The map was compiled by
Theodore Rowland under the direc
tion of F. A. Elliott, State Forester.
The map shows the amount of luei
chantable timber, the cut-over areas
re-stocking, cut-over areas not re
stocking, burned areas re-stocked,
burned areas not re-stocked and
brush.
As a matter of dollars and cents,
the forest department gives thirteen
reasons why a camp fire should never
be left until it has burned out. They
are as follows:
Oregon has more standing 'timber
than any other state in the Union, or
approximately 400,000,000,000 feet.
When manufactured Into lumber,
Oregon's timber will bring in at least
$6,000,000,000 of outside money, 80
per cent of which will be spent for
labor and supplies.. ,4. .. ,.
Oregon is receiving annually $60,
000,000 for lumber and other timber
products. The industry Is developing
rapidly.
Oregon timber and lumber indus
try pays approximately one-third of
the taxes of the state.
When timber is destroyed by fire,
the state loses directly the taxes
which the property would yield until
cut, and indirectly at least eighty per
cent of its manufactured value. For
every 1000 feet of timber burned the
owner loses the value of the stump
age, about $2.00 and the state the
amount expended for labor and sup
plies in manufacturing it into lumber
about $8.00.
The last census shows 34,772 peo
ple engaged in manufacturing Indus
tries in Oregon, of whom 16,833, or
50 per cent, are employed in the lum
ber industry.
Out of a population of 672,765
people in Oregon, 84,000, or one-
eighth of the total population, is di
rectly dependent upon the lumber in
dustry. No other manufacturing in
dustry in the state employs one-
tenth as many men as this one.
Over $70,000 of outside money is
each day brought into the state of
Oregon by the lumber industry.
Eighty per cent of our outgoing
freight is lumber.
Already the revenue derived from
Oregon's timber exceeds that from
wheat, fruit, vegetables and fish com
bined and cutting had hardly begun
Oregon's timber area is approxi
mately 25,000,000 acres, of which
about one-half is privately owned
and one-half publicly owned. '.-
Timber owners spend each year to
protect their property against fire
from $150,000 to $300,000, and em
ploy about 400 patrol men. ; The
state expends $30,000 yearly and re
ceives $10,000 from the Federal gov
ernment for patrol work, which em
ploys 60 patrolmen.
Approximately 4,000,000 acres of
Oregon timber or 160,000,000,000
board feet, has so far been destroyed
by lire. This timber, if standing
would be worth at least $240,000,000
and pay an annual tax of $2,000,000
where now practically no tax is de
rived.

Dan Engelman was down from
Heppner Tuesday. He has been do

that place and will soon arrive here
to run out some work in this line.

Dr. Alex Reid, of Stanfleld, visited
with friends in lone Friday and Sat
urday last. Dr. Reid was formerly
located at this place In the practice

Bert Bowker and E. L. ' Berry
passed through lone from Heppner
Tuesday with the necessary para
phernalia for blazing out an automo
bile trail.
E. R. Lundell is now driving a
new Reo which arrived during the
week from Portland. He is agent in
Morrow county for this car.
Mrs. Alice Weatherford, of 01ex(

Frank A. Lundell is in Portland
