The Fable of the Printing Order

order for printing to place with one of the printers o his Town.
"Verily," quoth he, "I am up a stump, for I fain wouldst have a
job done, the appearance whereof would please me and all who read
it, yea even unto the last of them. Yet the price I would have to be

And long did lie worry over the seeming difficulty of finding a
printer who would fill the qualifications. He named over 10 himself
all the printers of his Town until he came to the name of a certain
shop whose work was synonymous with excellence, and his face
lighted up as with exceeding great joy he went to the telephone

PATRIOTIC PREPAR
EDNESS CONVENTION
Astoria, Ore., March 7. Snokane
will be the scene of a unique conven
tion to be held on Mondav and Tues
day, March 27-28, 1916. It is called
"Patriotic Preparedness Conven
tion," and will be attended by dele
gates to be named by commercial or
ganizations, boards of county com
missioners and mayors of the states
of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Mon
tana and the Dakotas.
The meeting will be a general get-
together of the Northwest on the sub
ject of Pacific coast preparedness,
and will be under the joint auspices
of the Spokane Chamber of Com
merce, the Kalispell, Montana,
Chamber of Commerce and the Co
lumbia Naval Base committee of As
toria. Addresses will be given by
military and naval experts and rep
resentative citizens of the six states
participating.
The subjects winch will bo dis
cussed by the convention are:
1st. Equipment of the mouth of
the Columbia river as a ilrst class
naval base by the general government.
2nd. Coast defenses for the Pa
cific littoral of Oregon and Washington.
3rd. Resources of the Northwest
adapted to the manufacture of muni
tions.
These are vital tonics and bear
upon the great and pressing question
of national preparedness in general
and of the Pacific Northwest In par
ticular. It Is expected that many il
luminating facts on each topic will
be brought out, and that a complete
Bhowing will be assembled for pres
entation to the Congress of the Uni
ted States setting forth the necessity
for recognition of the northwestern
states In the naval and military pro

Northwest can and should get to
gether, since all are equally interest
ed. As the title of the conveution in
dicates patriotism and preparedness
