COUNTY SCHOOL NOTES
By Supt. S. B. Notson.
The writer visited the. Lexington
school lust week. The new building
is almost complete. The Board of
Directors are planning to put the
school in the class of standard high
schools. They are alto making ar
rangements to introduce a full
course of domestic science next year.
The manual training work, which
has been installed this year is prov
ing very ponular. The auditorium is
ample and is well arranged. This
will make possible many advantage
ous features.
Only a few teachers have enrolled
with the Extension Department of
the State University for the reading
circle work. This should not be put
off until vacation. Do not delay. Ac
cording to a recent court decision a
teacher's contract is not valid unless
his certificate has been registered,
and no certificate can be registered
unless the reading circle work has
been done. The State Superinten
dent is insisting that the county su
perintendents adhere rigidly to the
requirements. Teachers who expect
to qualify for the professional certifi
cates to be issued for professional
interest should read at least two of
the reading circle books. Many ru
ral teachers are taking up the Na
tional Rural Teachers' reading circle
work. If you have not received a
bulletin In regard to this work, write
U. S. Commissioner of Education
Claxton, Bureau of Educaton, Wash
ington, D. C. and ask for one. If you
are a rural teacher, you will find it
to your advantage to know about
this work. It is indorsed by nearly
every State Superintendent and by a
large number of county superinten
dents.
It Is reported that some of the
eighth grade pupils over the state
think that they do not need to give
such close study to history and civil
government since the plan of the ex
aminations has been changed. If they
think it will be easier to make the
proper showing and neglect to do the
work properly, they will undoubted
ly be disappointed In the results. The
really good student is the one who
will -obtain the best standings.
The fair board will soon outline a
plan for judging teams from the dif
ferent high schools of the county
Each high school may have a team in
stock judging, one In judging grains
and other farm products, one in
judging the work in domestic science
and art. So, boys and girls of the
high schools, begin to get ready to
loin a judging team from your
school. The prizes will be awarded
to the team, not to the individual
members of the team. They will be
something which will be of benefit to
