L. J. Allen, assistant state leader
in Industrial cluu work of the exten
sion dorartmcnt of the Oregon Agri
cultural College, spent Monday in this
city placing his work before the stu
dents of the Heppner schools. HU
work at the present time consists
chiefly in organizing boys and girls
pig clubs in Oregon, in conjunction
with the Crn C lubs. It is the object
of the department to have the Pig
Clubs co-operate in their work -with
v.he Bureau of Animal Husbandry,
U. S. Department oi Agriculture, the
state superintendent of public in
struction, the county Rchool superin
tendents, teachers and parents.
The Corn Club members are rais
ing profitable yields of corn where it
was thought impossible to grow it a
tew years ago, and it is hoped the im
portance of feeding crops to live
stock on the farm may be emphasized
n this Pig Club work.
It would be well if all members of
Corn Clubs would enroll in the Pork
Production work and thus lend a
hand in thaendeavor to improve the
quality of swine in Oregon, and at
the same time learn how to make
more rapid and economical gains in
hog feeding.
There will b9 two distinct , divis
ions of the Pig Club project. Division
I, the care and management of a
jrood sow and litter of pigs. Divis
ion II, the feeding and care of one or
more pigs from weaning time for a
period ci at least four months.
OBJECTS OF THE WORK The
ibject of forming Pig Clubs among
the boys and girls may be briefly
3tated as follows:
1. To stimulate an interest in
swine production and to teach the
boys and girls how to raise better
and cheaper hogs by the use of im
proved blood and the growing of for
ige crops.
2. To increase the number of hogs
aised on the farm in order that the
aieat for the home and that require
;o feed the extra farm labor may be
produced instead of being bought.
3. To complement the work of the
joys' ar.d girls' Corn Clubs by show
ing thom how they can profitably sell
heir corn through hogs. .
4. To encourage the home curing
A meats on the farm.
5. To teach the boys how to judge
lops and to select them for breeding
jr market purposes.
6. To encourage the growing of
.'aiage crops and discourage the use
;f high-priced' feeds. . . ,
7. To instruct the boys and girls
in 'a practical way In the manage
nent, feeding, sanitation, and pre
vention of diseases of swine, all o"
vhich information proves valuable
vvith respect to other forms of live
stock work.
8. To give the boys and girls a
means of earning some money for

Paying His Way.
In a rural court 'the old squire had
made a ruling so unfair that three
young lawyers at once protested
against such a miscarriage of justice.
The squire immediately fingd each of
the lawyers $5 for contempt of court.
There was silence, and then an,
older lawyer walked slowly to the
front of the room and deposited a $10
bill with the clerk. He then address
ed the judge as follows:.
"Your Honor, I wish to state that
I have twice a3 much contempt for
this court as any man in the room."
