DK.iTII CAMAS.
The Department of Agriculture has
just issued a bulletin (No. 125) upon
Zycadenus or Death Camas." This
bulletin will doubtless be of Interest
to those who have recently suffered
losses due to the poisoning of their
stock caused by the eating of this
plant.
According to this publication, the
death camas is found throughout the
I'nited States, and as far north as
Alaska: but it is most abundant from
the Rocky Mountains west to the Pa
cific Ocean. The plant may grow as
more or less scattered individuals,
but it is sometimes-massed together
in large areas. In appearance it is
grass like, growing rrom a rootstock
or bulb which looks like an onion;
while the flowers are greenish white
or yellow and somewhat resemble
mignonette. In the Northwest the
plant is known by numerous common
names, such as lobelia, snap plant,
alkali grass, water lily, wild onion,
hog's potato, squirrel food, poison
sego, etc.
Numerous experiments have been
made to discover a remedy for pois
oning of sheep caused by eating this
plant, but no satisfactory or prac
tical medical remedy has been found.
To prevent losses, it is important to
recognize the plant and avoid camp
ing stock on it at any time, or graz
ing upon it when the animals are
liungrv. If the. animals become sick
they should be kept quiet, and under
this treatment many will recover.
Krank Glasscock's buggy team took
a little spin up the street on their
own account yesterday, stopping
rather suddenly at the side door of
Ashbaiieh's shop. They made a live
ly run for a distance and some rather
abrupt turns, and the net results of
injuries to the rig were a broken
tongue and slightly bent rod or two.
The team was left standing for a
minute at the front gate of the Hmead
residence while Mr. Glasscock was Inside.
