Heppner Gazette, June Is, 1890.
All Heppner's visitors to the Port
land races have returned.
Joe Williams left Sunday for the
Greenhorn mines.
Mrs. C. N. Briggs, mother of Leon,
Is visiting in Heppner.
Seventeen car loads of wool have
been shipped from Heppner so far
this season.
Misses Belle Elder and Lizzie Mat
lock are home from St. Helen' Hall,
of Portland.
Frank Sloan, a rustling young
man of Buter creek, represented his
section here last week.
Henry Blackman's friends cele
brated his victory here last Thursday
eve, the music of the Heppner band
and the firing of anvils being an im
portant feature. Mr. ISlackman made
a few well-timed remarks on this occasion.
Uncle Jack Morrow has been ap-
the World's Fair Commissioners, and
will leave for Chicago this week to
be present at their first meeting, June
26th. All know that Uncle Jack will
do his share towards giving Eastern
Oregon a good representation in
1892. .
J. W. Ambrose and J. A. Powell
were over from Hitter last week. Mr.
Powell called on the Gazette office,
and in conversation with him we
learned that he and his neighbors are
much interested in a direct road from
Heppner to Hitter. The road located
by our county court some three years
ago is the best route, he says, and it
was generally understood over in his
section last summer that this was an
accepted road. Acting upon this con
clusion, Mr. Powell secured a sub
scription of IK)0 days work for the
Grant county end of the route,
which has been duly surveyed and
ordered opened by their county court.
Since that time the Hitterites have
learned the true state of affairs con
cerning this rnid, and to some extent
they have lost interest in the project.
However, the supervisor of the Grant
county division will put all his work
on the road and many now are
working out their subscriptions. Ful
ly realizing that the completion of
this Hitter road to Heppner means
trade and business for Heppner, the
larger part of which is now going to
Pendleton, it behooves the people
here to do something towards its
completion. We can have all the
trade as well as a larger part o it, ff
we make the effort.

Will Beattie, dean of Kansas com
mercial travelers, once attended a so
cial gathering among the "400" of
Wichita. He found himself with a
dashing young society woman from
the east, whose idea of social stand

was quite taken with Beattie and
finally she made bold to ask: "What
business are you In, Mr. Beattie?'
"I'm a commercial traveler," he re-

A medium grade apple, no different
in any respect from other apples of
its kind-, stood on a little pedestal in
the show window of a local tailor.
No other advertisement was used by
the tailor, but his scores of patrons
were mystified and entirely unin
formed as to "Why the apple?" Ques
tions were shot at the tailor, all di
rected at what on earth the apple
signified. Finally the tailor asked
with a complacent smile:
"If It hadn't been for an apple
where would the clothing business be
today?" Brockton Enterprise.
Mike Szepanek was very proud of
the fine-showing his crops were mak
ing on his homestead near the mouth
of Sand Hollow, up to a few days ago.
But now he is lamenting their sorry
condition. Hiff wheat has been en
tirely eaten off; mowed to the ground
by the pesky black tailed rabbits in
festing that section in such large
numbers. They have not tackled his
rye crop yet and Mike contemplates
heading them off on this in order to
get a little feed for his stock. His
neighbors' crops have also suffered
damages by the rabbits and it will bo
necessary to devise some means of
demonstration getting rid of this pest if the people
and fires a thirty-two-caliber projec-, down that way succeed in raising any
tile. Judge. crP3 at aI1-
