SCHOOL NOTES.
By Supt. S. K. Notson.
Blanks have been sent to the sev
eral school clerks upon which they
will make their annual reports. I
find that in some districts a copy of
this report is not filled out in the
clerk's record book. A copy should
always be filled out in the record
book in the place provided for it.
The balance on hand at the last
annual meeting, the amount of the
apportionment made by the county
superintendent, and a few other
items have been filled in on the
blanks. This will save the clerks
some time. These figures must not
be changed. If your books do not
show the same facts, write to the
superintendent at once.
The law requires the report of the
clerk to be approved at the annual
meeting ; hence the report should be
carefullv made out before that meet
ing. The board should examine the
books to see that the accounts are
correct and agree with the renort.
The report should be sent in within
five davs. This is verv important
this Var. Owing to the change in
the date of the teachers' examination
for June the work in the offices of the
countv superintendents and the State
Sunerintendent will be greatly con
gested during the month of ulv,
hence it is imnortant. that the reports
be made on time. Unless they come
In promptly, your district may lose
its apportionment, hich is some
thing we should all rpgret.
It is not advisable for districts to
vote a tax at the annual meeting this
vear. The change in the law is such
that it will be much better to hold a
special meeting after the tax roll is
completed. This will be an Incon
venience for several districts, but it
is the safe plan.
Many inquiries have come in In re
gard -to the date of the annual meet
ing. The date has not heen changed
except for districts having a popula
tion of over 20,000.
I would suggest again that the ru
ral districts hold a sort of picnic or
basket dinner on the day of the an
nual meeting. The people can then
take up the matters necessary to
make the school a standard school.
If this is done, no doubt quite a num
ber of the schools which have not
reached the standard mark this year
will be able to do so next year. I
would especially urge that the term
be made not less than eight months.
