Commissioner of Education has sent
out invitations to the city superin
tendents, county superintendents, and
teachers to attend the conference to
be held at Portland, Oregon, May 12-
16 under the leadership of the Na
tional Congress of Mothers and Par
ent-Teachers Association working
jointly with the Home Education
Division of the U. S. llureau of Ed
ucation. This conference will be
merged with the annual Child Wel
fare Conference. Representative wo
men from each community are also
urged to attend. This is one of a
series of conferences to be held at
Chicago, St. Paul, Bismark, Butte
Helena, Seattle, Portland and San
Francisco. The Portland meeting Is
to be the most Important of the en
tire series. The advisory council of
this organization is composed of such
men as Theodore Roosevelt, Robert
Collyer, Rev. Newell Dwight Hillis
and Dr. Geo. E. MacLean. Some o
the ablest speakers on child welfare
topics will appear on the program at
Portland.

passengers' who had to walk around
the slide down on the river last Tues
