Street Are lleing Oiled.
Heppner streets are undergoing
their annual oiling this week and the
dust evil will be an absent one during
the summer months. The streets
were sprinkled thoroughly with water
before the oil was applied, it being
the opiuion of those having the work
in charge that this is the best method.
Every principal street in the city will
receive an application of crude oil.
The expense for oiling this year, un
like last year, is being paid by the
city through the taxation method,
rather than individual contribution
by the business men. Two tanks of
oil will be used at this time, but as to
whether more will be put on later,
has not been fully decided.
THE HITTER ROAD.
Agitation for a good road between
Heppner and Ritter started as far
back as twenty-five years ago and
from the Heppner Gazette of April
23, 1S91), we take the following
item :
"Money has been raised in Hepp
ner to send ('apt. Vm. Warren over
to assist the Grant county viewers in
locating a route from Ritter to the
county line of Morrow and Grant, to
intersect a road from Heppner over
the most feasible route. The Grant
county court has ordered a survey of
their part of the road and if our
county court will do as well, we will
in the near future have a good road
from Heppner to Ritter. It is to the
interests of both sections to have a
short cut acros s the mountains.
Every live citizen w ill lend aid to the
project."
PORTLAND HEWS LETTER
Portland, April 27. Governor
Withyeombe has advised that the en
tire state devote the period of May 4
to 11, inclusive, to the cleaning and
painting up of unsightly back yards
and buildings. Mayor Albee has de.s
ignated the same dates for the same
work in Portland, and to insure that
the work is done, and well done, the
Portland Chamber of Commerce has
appointed a committee from among
its most energetic members to or
gani.e the different sections of the
city into effective units and exercise a
general supervision over the Work.
It is almost certain that the pres
ent year will see a greater movement
of tourists and visitors to Portland,
and to all the other sections of Ore
gon, than during any year since the
Lewis and Clark Fair, and a concert
ed and persistent campaign should be
carried on to make city and state
cleaner and more attractive than any
other section of the Northwest. Call
fornia and Washington have been
wielding paintbrush and rake for a
long time, and it only remains for
Oregon to get into line and make it
three of a kind.

The nlan inaugurated nhnut tlirpp
months ago by the Union Stockyards
whereby the school children of Ore
gon, Washington and Idaho, by sign
ing a 10-months note at 6 per cent.
could receive high-grade sows al
ready bred and treated for cholera,
has met with such unexpected success
that it has been necessary to call a
conference of the raisers of stock of
that class to devise means for filling
all the applications for stock. It is
believed this campaign will be nation
wide in its effects on the industry.
TO THWART STOCK THIEVES.
The Times-Herald, of Burns, Har
ney County, says there is prospect
that the Cattle and Horse-Raisers'
Association of Oregon will hold its
annual meeting in that place June
14. The only thing in doubt is the
co-operation, or more properly, the
promise of attendance upon the meet
ings, of the cattle and horse owners
of Harney county.
This association is one that has a
work before it which local organiza
tions of the same kind cannot hope to
accomplish. As a preventive against
loss of stock from range or farm the
local associations can comb only the
neighborhood, whereas the state
wide association is ahle to employ
men to watch the stockyards at mar
ket points and thus thwart the
thieves.
It is good business sense for the
stockgrowers and stockfeeders of in
terior Oregon to make such over
tures to the Cattle and Horse-Raisers'
Association as to secure the
meeting there in June. All the asso
ciation asks is that responsive and
friendly spirit of co-operation be
manifested by a promise to get a
good attendance of stockmen out to
the meetings. It ought to be an easy
matter. Oregonian.

An Attraction.
There is nothing that so quickly
arouses the Interest of a member of
the Knights of Pythias order as the
story of Damon and Pythias. It is a
story that never grows old by repeti
tion, though more than two thousand
years old. With this in mind the lo
cal lodge of the order is considering
the exhibition in the near future of
moving pictures of Damon and Py
thias. The films of this play, 6f
which there are six reels, have re
cently been produced at an approxi
mate cost of $200,000. The pro
duction has been endorsed by the su
preme lodge.
We have a fine new Bungalow, a

A movement lias been started for
the completion of the works of the
Portland Cement Company at Oswe
go, which has been at a standstill for
nearly three years. The buildings
are ready for the machinery and the
materials are at hand from which to
make a high grade of cement. It is
stated that recent sales of stock have
been made amounting to over $300,
000 and that the company has $50,
000 on deposit. If the plant is put
into operation it will be the only ce
ment mill between IJellingham,
Washington, and points in California.
On July 5, Portland will entertain
a distinguished party of business men
and financiers from China who will
visit this section on a general busi
ness survey of the Northwest. Ore
gon's Oriental trade in grain, lumber
and manufactured products has been
Increasing in importance for several
years, largely as the result of a visit
of prominent business men to China,
and the visit here in July will be in
the nature of a return call.
On June 2, 3 and 4 a great live
stock show will bo held at Union at
which not only the Grand Ronde Val
ley will be represented, but all other
parts of the state. Profiting by ex
perience gained during the past six
years, the management is confident
that the 1915 show will be by far the
best ever held in that part of Oregon.
The International Dry Farming
Congress will hold its annual meeting
