JC. R0WXS0X, of Portland, who
recently returned from a trip
through tue Middle West, says that
what Impressed him In Michigan,
Ohio and adjoining states was the
prosperous condition of the farmers
and dairymen. All of them are in
good shape financially, and looking
forward to a good season in 1915.
"I account for It largely hccause
of their up-to-date equipment," said
Mr. Robinson. "They have learned
that machinery can do much of their
work for them more economically
than hand labor. Take the dairy
farm back there and many of them
are models of cleanliness and effi
ciency. Every appliance and device
which will make the work better,
quicker or easier is at hand In good
order. The best of machinery helps
these men to make more money than
they ever made before.
"I know there are some dairy
farms iu the Northwest which can
not be surpassed for equipment, hut
there in the Middle West it is the
rule and not the exception to find
up-to-date machinery to do the work
whenever It is possible. I hope to
see the day when the same can be
said of our great Xorthwestern coun
try, so adapted ' by nature to the
dairy business."
Mr. Robinson is manager of the
J. C, Robinson Company, of Port
land. He has been in the cream sep
arator business for nearly 20 years
In the East and here on the Coast.
For ten years he managed a branch
of the Empire Cream Separator Com
pany in Portland. On his Eastern
trip he visited the plant of the Anker
Holth Manufacturing Company, of
Fort Huron, Mich., and was so Im
pressed by the machine it produces
that he made arrangements to handle
it on the Coast. He Is very en
thusiastic about its merits and says
he is particularly anxious to ac
quaint every dairyman with its work
ing points, which he declares are
really unusual and extraordinary.
Mr. Robinson has been In the
business long enough to know a
good separator when he sees one,
and his square business policy will
go far toward introducing this new
separator on the market here. Else

Leave Fires in Camp
Burning; Are Fined
THE case of J. L. Mulder, G. Rath
man and O. Edson, of Lynden,
Wash., for fire trespass on the Wash
ington National forest, was tried in
Seattle on January 27. The three
men pleaded guilty and paid a fine
of $25 each, with costs amounting
to $29.48, a total of $104.48.
On the night of August 12, 1914,
these three men camped at "three
mile spring" on the Washington Na
tional forest. On the following morn
ing, they left their camp fire burn
ing and continued on their way
through the forest. The evidence
brought out the fact that they had
received printed notices from the
forest supervisor before starting on
their trip, and also had observed the
fire warnings posted in the forest, but
had paid no heed to them. Although
the fire was discovered and extin
guished before any damage was done,
the regulations and laws governing
the setting and guarding of fires In
National forests make such careless
ness as these campers showed crim
inal offense.
