CENTRAL OREGON
INDinXENS:
With the purchase by the T. H.
Shevlin Lumber Company of 60,000
acres of yellow pine timber from the
Deschutes Lumber Company for a
reported consideration of $3,000,
000, it is expected that preparations
will be made during the year to be
gin cutting timber on an extensive
scale. The announcement of the
deal in The Oregonian yesterday has
directed the attention of railroad
men and lumbermen to the fact that
Central Oregon is on the eve of a
tremendous development.
When the facts are recognized
that there are only three sawmills in
the district with a total capacity of
less than 65,000 feet and there is ap
proximately 20,000,000,000 feet of
saw timber tributary to Bend, some
idea of the future of that territory
can be gained when big sawmill and
logging operations are started.
The timber belt of Central Ore
gon comprises an area extending
from Bend south to the California
line, a distance of 125 miles in length
by 50 miles, in width. Klamath Falls,
to the south and Bend to the north,
are the natural milling and market
ing points for this timber. The
northern half of this area is covered
with a fine stand of yellow or West
ern white pine. On the swales and
along the rivers, black pine has a
dense growth.
Yellow pine of Central Oregon pre
sents a most attractive appearance
from the standpoint of the logger.
There is no underbrush and the land
is almost level. j Stuinpage will av
erage about 16,000 feet to the acre,
running as high as 25,000 feet on
.some tracts. The average tree will
cut five to six 14 to 16-foot logs.
The average butt diameter is from
30 to 40 inches, holding a uniform
she well into the branches. The
timber will average 10 per cent
dears and from 35 to 40 per cent
shop.
ideal conditions are presented in
Central Oregon for the use of elec
tricity in logging and milling opera
tions. The Deschutes River, which is
fed by subterranean streams, has a
maximum rise of less than 12 inches.
It is estimated that the 12-mile
stretch immediately south of Bend
has a potential horsepower of 250,
000. This power can be converted
into electrical nnits and transmitted
to logging and manufacturing points
at minimum costs of installation and
operation.
The three mills now operating at
Bend are: The Bend Company, daily
capacity of 30,000 feet; Bend Brick
t.- Lumber Company, daily capacity
20,000; E. A. Griffin Company, ca
pactiy, 12,000 feet.
The following are the principal
timber owners:
T. H. Shelvln Lumber Company, of
Minneapolis, 180,000 acres; Christian
Mueller Lumber Company, of Daven
port, la., 30,000 acres; Scanlon-Gip-son
Lumber Company, of Minneap
olis, 28,000 acres; Bend Timber Com
pany, of Minneapolis, 35,000 acres;
Al worth-Washburn Lumber Com
pany, of Minneapolis, 256,000 acres;
Gilchrist & Sons, of Alpena, Mich.,
92,000 acres; Northwest Timber
Company, of Portland, 24,000 acres.

RURAL SOCIAL CENTERS
We need social centers where our
young people can be entertained,
amused and instructed under the di
rection of cultured, clean and com
petent leadership, where aesthetic
surroundings stir the love for the
beautiful, 'where art charges the at
mosphere with inspiration and power,
and innocent amusements instruct
and brighten their lives.
. To hold our young people on the
farm we must make farm life more
attractive as well as the business of
farming more remunerative. The
school house should be the social unit,
properly equipped for nourishing and
building character, so that the lives of
our people can properly function
around It and become supplied with
the necessarj elements of human
thought and activity.
