BIG RABBIT DRiVE
NEAR LEXINGTON

Benefit of Charity.
A big rabbit drive is being ar
ranged to take place in the vicinity of
Lexington this coming week, either
Tuesday or Wednesday, the exact
date not being definitely settled just
at this writing.
This drive is being arranged
through Mayor Smead of Heppner
and Banker Scott of Lexington. The
mayor became interested in' the prop
osition through an appeal Bent out
from the Muts of Portland. The
rabbits are splendid meat at this time
of the year, and there Is a strong de
mand for this kind of food to be dis
tributed to the needy of the big city.
There is no doubt but that a success
ful drive can be made and many
hundreds of rabbits gathered in. Ar
rangements are made for shipping
them to the Muts at Portland, and
this organization will see to their
proper distribution. Being In the
interest of a good cause, our people
will gladly respond. The drive will
serve the double purpose of ridding
the neighborhood of large numbers of
rabbits and furnishing food to those
in need of it.
According to present arrangements
no guns are to be used. People from
Heppner, who have no conveyance
from here should go to Lexington by
train and from there they will be
taken to the hunting grounds.
Elmer Beaman last week sold his
bowling alley in the Roberts build
ing to Victor Baldwin and Edgar
Ayers, well known young men, who
will hereafter conduct the business.
Jas. H. Wyland, well known Hard-
man sheepman, and Morrow county
pioneer, was down from the south
end of the county last Saturday, at

Leo Kelly, director-general of
Portage Lake, has solved one of the
oddest of mysteries. Kelly operates
the motor boat ferry service. A few
weeks ago Kelly observed a myster
ious disappearance of gasoline from
his reserve tank in the boat. Each
night a gallon or more of gasoline
disappeared.
Kelly searched for leaks, tested his
valves and could not find the cause
of the shrinkage. He began to sus
pect that someone was pilfering dur
ing the night.
Watching his vessel to learn the
cause of the loss of gasoline he heard
an odd sound under the keel, and
casting his light down to the surface
of the water he saw an eighteen
pound pickerel sucking gasoline from
the escape pipe at the water line.
