S Dairying on Five Acres
HOW many eows could be sneeess
fully maintained on five acres of
land through intensive crop rota
tion is a question governed entirely by
natural conditions and the degree of ef
ficiency and thoroughness applied
Ihrough individual effort. Bye, oats, al
lalfa, field peas, forage corn, clover, al
pike, vetch; mangel wurtzels, tale, sugar
Ibeojta and carrots are all good soiling
Crops if adapted to soil and climate.
Alfalfa, because of the high per
centage of nutrient it contains, is an
(excellent soiling crop. Add to this, its
Economic valne as a soiling plant, it
tie in g possible to produce four or five
Crops in rotation during the soiling
Season, it is evident that it is one of
(the most valuable of the grasses for
Boiling purposes. Naturally with
Succession of growing crops for the
maintenance of a dairy herd there
yrould bo at times greater quantities
of food than the herd would require
Borne of the surplus food could be
profitably fed to a pen of hogs, and
the balance put into a alio for winter
use.
Some years ago an experimentation
was made in the Dungeuess valley to
ascertain what could be done in the
Economic maintenance of a dairy herd
pn a small plot of land through soil
ing methods. The plot used contained
an acre and three quarters of land.
(The soil was rich alluvial river bottom
pith abundant moisture at all seasons
tot the year. Tho experimentation was
made nnder the personal supervision
of an experienced dairyman who knew
what had been accomplished by dairy
men in Denmark and Holland in the
maintenance of dairy herds through
rotation of soiling crops. The plot
was divided into a dozen or more sub
divisions each of whieh was planted
to grasses, grains and vegetables. The
attempt which was successful, was
madeto maintain a herd of sixteen
dairy cows in full flow of milk on the
successive crops grown on the acre
and three-quarters for a period of four
months. The herd was stall fed, The
entire plot was kept eonatantly iue
eessively planted to a rotation of crops
throughout the demonstration period.
Beferring to the remarkable demon
stration Mr. Wall, under whose super
vision it was prosecuted, doclared that
the dairymen of western Washington
did not realize the tremendous pos
sibilities before then through soiling
methods. The soiling crops used in
the experimentation were rye, oats,
corn, field peas, mangels, carrots,
beets and -kale. Some years ago the
federal department of agriculture in
one of its publications referred to a
romarkable achievement in intensive
farming by a Pennsylvania farmer on
a fifteen acre farm. The land was only
of average fertility, yet by intensive
ly utilizing every inch of soil this
farmer maintained the year round
thirty-four head of cattle, a team of
horses, pigs and a large flock of
chickens.

IN ALL FOREIGN countries noted
for one or more pure breeds of
horses, practically no "scrub,"
"grade," or non-registered stallions are
used for public sen-ice, and some of the
foreign governments prohibit the use
of such horses.
The French government for over 100
fears has maintained stables of care
fully selected, sound, purebred- stal
lions for breeding purposes. The best
stallions in Europe are annually chosen
for use in these stud, and since looa
all stallions not coming within special
(flosses have beon excluded from public
kervico. The classes referred to are se
lected by government veterinarians, who
inspect all horses and- grade them as
follows: "Subsidized" class, compris
ing stallions of a certain standard and
for each of which a cash bonus of from
$00 to 100 per yoar is paid to the
owner to keep the animal in tho coun
try for use by owners of marcs:
"Authorized" class, comprising horses
of slightly lower quality that are au
thorized, after passing inspection, by
& card certifying them as recommend
ed by the government for use as sires;
"Approved" class, comprising a fow
horses permitted to stand for service,
but not granted a bonus or recommen
dation card.
In Belgium the governmont has, sinco
1850, maintained a great horso-breeding
establishment and promotes the breed
ing of purebred Belgian, draft horses
by an annual grant of-$5,000 to the
Official draft horse registration so
ciety, and an annual appropriation of
"0,000 to encourage the horse breed
ing industry of the country. Liberal
prizes are awarded throughout the
country; stallions are officially exam
ined by government experts, and both
approved stallions and mares are
-Pintail "maintenance" bounties to re
tain thorn in Belgium. Under such aus
picos horse brooding is making wonder
ful progress nnd only purebred stallions
are in use for service.
Tn r.prm.inv covernment supervision
of horse breeding has obtained for cen
turies and today is similar to that in
voguo in Belgium, it haying been re
quired by law "that no permits should
bo issued authorizing the uso of the
stallions, unless they passed a satisfac
tory government inspection." At the
present time both the government and
agricultural societies promote intelli
gent horse breeding. Prizes aw award
ed for animals of special merit, and
such animals must remain in the coun
try for a specified time. Stallion shows
have been held for many years at
Aurich in East Friesland. Prizes for
brood mares are awarded by the government.
The eovernment of Austria conducts
a somewhat similar supervision, and
large sums of money are devoted to
the horse breeding industry each year.
In Great Britain practically ail we
farmers recognize the importance of
using purebred sires and oniy sucu
are used in the districts whence come
the well known breeds of horses.
Mfivinir-nictiire shows will be con
ducted on transatlantic liners, if the
insurance underwriters will consent.

WHY IS A WALNUT
like red clover? The walnut indus
try today is just where the clover in
dustry was twenty-five years ago,
when few people realized its value.
We made a small fortune growing
clover hay before the average farmer
realized its possibilities. So we are
staking our faith in the walnut in
dustry by planting a large acreage,
and are already reaping a harvest.
While it has a very small acreage in
walnuLs, the Northwest has thou
sands of acres of the world's finest
walnut land.
After years of study we are pre
pared to give information concerning
varieties, culture, sous, etc. we
grow the finest grafted walnut trees
on the market.
