A machine for trimming hedges has
been invented which earries an electric
motor. Tho operator passes the trim'
mer over the surface to be shorn after
the manner of a horse clipper. The
machine is built of aluminum with a

Staples Are Driven Into New Concrete
Posts.
Concrete fence posts into which wire
staples can be driven are now being
manufactured in large quantities. In
shape and method of reinforcement they
are very much like other cement posts,
but the means provided for securing
tho fence wires is unusual ( and practi
cal. Down the side of jach post is a
narrow channel filled with a composi
tion into which nails and staples can
be drivsa n 'sily as into wood. And
casing containing the motor. The gear
case is completely inclosed so that no
dirt can enter tho mechanism, and the
trimmer is arranged to be used on either
side of the hedge, cutting top and sides
equally well. The power is controlled
by a switch on the handle, operated by
tho thumb.
Tree Planting Machine.
With a tree planting tool designed bv
a Utah blacksmith, the hole is dug, the
little tree inserted and the earth packed
around the roots in ono operation, says
Popular Mechanics. The implement con
sists of a bar with a cross-arm at the
top and three blades of spring steel at
the bottom, somewhat on the principle
of the postdigger, and having a lever
near the lower end. The lever is
pressed with the foot, the tree inserted,
md the tool is then thrust forcibly into
the ground. A lever at the top of the
handle is then twisted to open the
blades and the implement is rcrewed
around in the hole until the soil is pul
verized. The planter is then withdrawn
leaving the cultivated earth packed
around the roots of the plant. Kxperi
ments made by the IT. S. forest service
have shown that one man with this tool
can plant 50 small trees in 33 minutes.

A Water Merry-Go-Bound Teaches Boys

In one of the public schools of Cin
cinnati, having an 80-foot swimming
tank, an ingenious water merry-go-round
has been constructed after plans
made by the swimming instructor. It
consists of an oval track suspended
from the ceiling above the pool. Trol
leys provided with strong ropes are at

The building advocated will be erect
ed in a Biiitnble pluco on the exposi
tion grounds; it will be equipped with
the latest appliances and conveniences
that are used in modern farm homes.
Farm women of the different states
will be hostesses at various stated
times and the building will in this man
ner be a meeting place for, the farm
women of the world.
It is stated by those in authority
that the plan has received the sanc
tion of tho International Congress of
Farm Women and that ground will be
broken for the building this month.
Weekly conferences during the en
tire timo of the exposition will be an
interesting phase of tho plan; discus
sion luncheons will be arranged, prizes
offered for the most practical model
farm home, etc.
Affiliiation with tho International
Congress of Farm Women is tho mat
ter that is uppermost in the minds of
all farm women today, and every in
dependent farm woman's club in the
United States and Canada should write
to Mrs. Harbcrt, president of tho con
gress, and learn the method of organi
zation,

CiNDIGESTION and practically all
forms of stomach trouble are,
nine times out of ten, due to
acidity; therefore stomach sufferers
should, whenever possible, avoid eating
food that is acid in its nature, or which
by chemical action in the stomach de
velops acidity. Unfortunately, such a
rule eliminates most foods which are
pleasant to the taste as well as those
which arc rich in blood, flesh and nerve
building properties. This is the reason
why dyspeptics and stomach sufferers
are usually so thin, emaciated and lack
ing in that vital energy which can only
come from a well fed body. For the
benefit of those sufferers who have
been obliged to exclude from their diet
all stsrchy, sweet or fatty food, and are
trying to keep up a miserable existence
on gluten products, I would suggest
that yon should try a meal of any food
or foods which you may like, in mod
erate amount, taking immediately after
wards a tenspoonful of bisurated mag
nesia in a little hot or cold water. This
will neutralize any acid which may be
present, or which may be formed, and
instead of the usual feeling of uneasi
ness and fullness, you will fihd that
your food agrees with you perfectly.
Bisurated magnesia is doubtless the
best food corrective and antacid known.
It has no direct action on the stomach;
but by neutralizing the acidity of the
food contents, and thus removing the
source of the acid irritation which in
flames the delieate stomach lining, it
does more than could possihly bo done
by any drug or medicine. As a physi
cian, I believe in the use of medicine
whenever necessary, but I must admit
that I cannot fp the sense of "dosing
an inflamed and irritated stomach with
drugs instead of getting rid of the acid
the cause of all the trouble. Get a
liftle bisurated magnesia from vour
druggist, eat what you want at your
next meal, take some of the bisurated
magnesia as directed above, and see if
I'm not right."

spread where they cause sickness and

Not many people who have tubercle
bacilli (tuberculosis germs) in their
mouths know it. You never can be sure
that your own mouth is free from these
germs, hence do not endanger yonr fel
low man by the vicious and filthy habit
of pernicious expectoration.
MILE HINTS.
HE best milk will spoil unless it is
kept cold. If you do not keep ice,
invert a crock or a flower pot over
the bottle of milk on the basement
floor.
Modified cow's milk is the only safo
food for infant feeding in eases where
the mother is- physically unable to
nurse the child. Beware of condensed
milk and patent foods if you would
have a normally developed child.
Modified milk is milk that has been
modified to fit the needs of an indi
vidual baby. The formula usually con
tains specific amounts of cream, milk,
niilk sugar, lime water, etc. It takes
an expert physician to write this
formula and see that it fits the needs
of the baby.
Milk is the cheapest food in tbe mar
ket. '
The most valuable food prodnet in
milk is casein. And still the housewife
estimates the value of her milk by the
"eream line."

The city of Tacoma, Wash., has en
tered into a co-operative agreement with
the forest service for the protection of
the source of its water supply, the
watershed of the Green River, which
lies within the Rainier national forest.
The two agencies working together will
protect this stream from the results of
forest destruction by fire or by other
agencies.
