Mrs. Ethel Wilcox left Saturday
for Portland to visit relatives.
Mrs. Ward, mother of the Ward
brothers, returned to her home

A sister of Miss Florence Olmsted
arrived from Moscow, Idaho to be
with her during her sickness.
A. A. Roberts was in town Sat
urday. He reports the affairs of
his neighborhood progressing right
along. Crops look good, and occas
ional showers are helping the grain
grow.
M. II. Houser of Portland, a well
known grain buyer in the Northwest
states, was a caller at Lexington
Sunday.
A refreshing shower fell last
Thursday, laid the dust, cleaned the
air and improved things in appear
ance very much.
W. G. Scott and family took a
pleasure trip to Echo Saturday. Miss
Nettie Davis had charge of the bank
during their absence.
Mrs. Robinot the wife of our
blacksmith, has been on the sick list
for a few days. At the present writ
ing she is much improved.
The primary election on the 15 th
approaches and there seems to be a
little more activity among the var
ious candidates for nomination.
Mr. and Mrs. Ben Frieze were
down a few days ago from the French
Brothers ranch on Hinton creek,
where they will live this summer.
Reports from farmers in this lo
cality say that wheat and barley are
almost headed out in fine shape and
indications are for an early harvest.
Willard Blake, deputy county as
sessor, was in this vicinity for a few
days taking a list of property. Wil
lard has been very successful, as
none have escaped.
Waldon Rhea, a stockman who
lives on lower Butter creek in Uma
tilla county, was here a few days
looking after some horses he owns
in this part of the country.
Wm. Stauffer of Hood River was
here a few days looking after his
farm In Clarks Canyon. He reports
that the late freeze damaged the fruit
some in Hood River county.
W. F. Barnett and 'family. Hank
Parker and wife, Eph Eskelson and
wife took an auto excursion Sunday
to Pendleton to visit Chas. P. Bar
nett, a former resident of Lexington.
Deputy Sheriff George McDuffce
and Karl Boach made a business trip
to Castle Rock Friday night. They
brought back a number of the sec
tion crow of that place who partici
pated in a cutting affray there.
i The pupils of the Primary room
at the Public school were dismissed
last Wednesday for the year on ac
count of the illness of the teacher,
Miss Florence Olmsted. Miss Olm
sted's Illness is of a very serious na
ture. Mr, and Mrs. W. jl). Newlon were
m town on Sunday from the "Banana
Dolt." The well is over 700 feet in
depth and still going down. Sales
are stiil going on in that section of
the country and prospects for more
are coming In.
Johny McMillan had the misfor
tune to get his hands badly burned
Saturday with gasoline while mend
ing some auto tubes. He was taken
to lone to Dr. Chick, who dressed
the burns, and if no complications
act In, he will soon be well again.
Lexington members of the shear
ing crew who work with the Inde
pendent Shearing Plant, finished
shearing at Cecil station Saturday.
The plant was moved to Hynd Bros,
ranch on Sand Hojlow. They com
menced shearing again Monday
morning.
Mack Smith Is Found Guilty.
The case of the State of Oregon
against Mack Smith, came to triai
bc-foro'judBO Phelps in the Circuit
Court on Tuesday afternoon. Mr.
Smith had been indicted on the
charge of neglect of duty while in the
office of marshal of the City of Hepp
ner. In the trial it appeared that he
h'ad knowledge of the violation of
law and failed to furnish this know
ledge to tiie district attorney; in
other words ha was accused of pro
tecting and permitting gambling
within the city over which he pre
sided as a peace officer. Smith was
defended by S. E. Van Vactor and
Glenn Y. Wells prosecuted. After
being out until a late hour on Tues
day night the jury finally agreed on
a verdict of guilty and so reported.
The judgment of the court was
passed on Mr. Smith yesterday af
ternoon, and he was sentenced to
pay a fine of $500, or to serve a day
for each $2.00 thereof in the county
jail.
