LEXINGTON ITEMS
Miss Ethel Picketts is entertain
ing a friend from Heppner this week.
Born On last Thursday morning
to the wife of Clark Davis, a daugh
ter. Rev. L. E. Taber, the Methodist
minister preached a very nice Easter
sermon on Sunday night.
Dan Summers is blasting out the
side of the hill on his town proper
ty, and will erect a barn.
Some sneak thief entered the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Way. Beyond
opening a letter belonging to Mrs.
Way, no other damage was done.
The well drillers had a strenk of
bad luck because they lost a bunch
of tools down the hole where they
were driling at Nealy White's.
Don't forget the meeting of Far
mers' Union next Saturday with a
batki i diuuer, and a general good
time.
The spelling contest held at lone
on Friday was attended by some
from Lexington, who wore not very
well pleased. Full particulars could
not be obtained.
One of the Miller boys, while em
ployed by 0. S. Hodsdon was serious
ly injured by an enraged bull. The
boy was rescued by Bert Smith, but
not before he had received a broken
leg and other injuries.
We see the Socialists of Morrow
County have their ticket out for the
coming election on May 15th, with
two of our citizens on it. W. R.
Munkor8 is running for treasurer and
D. A. Porter is seeking the nomina
tion for coroner.
The Infant daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Art Keene died on Monday
morning at 8 o'clock. The child was
only o few days old. The funeral
was held about 5 o'clock in the eve
ning of the same day. Mrs. Keeno
was formerly Miss Anne Campbell.
The sorrowful parents have the sym
pathy of the community in the loss
of this, their first child.
There was not a very large crowd
in attendance at the entertainment
given for the benefit of the Home
Mission Society on Friday night on
account of the threatening weather.
The entire program was very well
given and we are sorry that there
was not a larger crowd present. A
bout $26.00 was taken in from the
sale of tickets.
FOREST NOTES.
China imports wood pulp from
Great Britian, Sweden, Norway, and
Germany.
The highest mountain in Montana,
Granite Peak, with an altitude of
noarly 13,000 feet, is in the Bear
tooth national forest.
Norway has 14 1 tree planting
societies The first was founded in
1909, and since then 26 million trees
have been planted, more than two
million having beon set out last year.
In many parts of the west the
snow is leaving the mountains ear
lier than usual. Foresters say that
this may mean a bad fire season,
and they are making plans for a
hard campaign.
New Jersey la said to have the
greatest proportion of railroad mil
age of any state in the country ,or one
mile of railroad to every three
square; miles ot territory. This
makes an unusual risk of forest fires
set by railroads.
The heavy storms In southern Cal
ifornia (luring tlio past rainy season
wiped out many miles of trails in the
national forests of that part of the
state. They are now being rebuilt
for the coming summer, for use in
fire protection. Thoy are also of
groat use to tourists, campers, and
prospectors.

The city of Hoppner has some ex
tensive street improvements under
way in the south end of town. The
old bridge which formerly crossed
Willow creek on South Court street,
has ben moved over to cross the
creek at Cannon street. A new
bridge is being constructed on Court.
Cannon stret will be graded and put
in first class condition, having been
unused since the Heppner flood,
eleven years ago.
