Heppner Commercial Club meets
the lirHt and third Fridays of each
month in the I. O. O. F. hall.
The executive committee this week
selected Rev. V. T. (iotilder as secre
tary. Mr. Goulder has already as
sumed tiie duties of the office and
with this matter settled, the Club
will advance some of the work al
ready outlined. Those holding mem
bership cards will be conferring a fa
vor upon the secretary by presenting
them for his signature.
Tiie feed which was planned for
tomorrow evening has been post
poned until Tuesday evening. March
10, on account of the presence of
"Farmer" Smith on that evening.
Anyone within reach of Heppner
will find it profitable to come and
hear this venerable sage of agricul
ture TheClubhasnotbeen informed
of the subject he will talk on at this
meeting, but whatever he will have
to say will be worth listening to.

Next week Is "Alfalfa Week" In the
schools of the state. This is one of
the moves toward hlgerdevelopment
in Oregon which should receive the
encouragement not only of the Com
mercial Club but of every patron of
the school us well. In Iowa a few
years ago the study of corn was in
jected Into the school system of the
state with the result that the total
corn production of the state has been
increased threeperccnt. Oregoncan i

Let us get down to careful study of
local conditions and make improve
ments where the most good will re
sult. The membership list Is still crow
ing. Remember, the present plan of
taking in members remains open un

The road committee visited Irrlgon
last week and returns with some In
teresting facts. Come out tomorrow
evening and hear the report.

A Heppner man this week sold a
thousand "setting" eggs to a Lex
ington man. No better poultry coun
try to be found than right here in
Morrow county.
Hog shipments from Heppner were
nearly three times as great In 191. 't as
In 11H2. A few years more of such
gains and the hog will be king.
The Club has under consideration
a clean-up day. This is a matter of
genuine interest to the town. A well
organized clean-up program will do
much to stimulate an interest Ineivic
beauty. In this line it might be con
sidered rhi-lit and proper to advocate
the organizing of a ladies' auxiliary
to co-operate with the Commercial
Club In the work of beautifying the
town. There are many things to lie
done before Heppner will look good
to the stranger within the gates,
and one of the lirst things Is to show
a disposition to work. The ladies
have always shown exceptional abil
ity in improvement work, and there
js everything in favor of a good big
ladies club at this time.
SCHOOL NOTES.
District 18 has a very small school,
only three pupils. Mrs. Edna White
is the teacher. A new set of maps
and a new alone have been purchased
recently with the proceeds of a box
social. New window shades have
been provided, also, fr m this fund.

work which the pupils have done.
When I approached the school in
District No. 20, I found the teacher.
Miss Alice Arnold, and the pupils
burning the sagebrush and trash which
they had cleared off the soliool ground.
This school has a flower garden com
ing on, some of the plants being sev
eral inches high. Some new charts
have been purchased recently. A fine
new flaii floated from the staff. The
pupils raised the money with which
to purchase the flag.

is to have an electric light and
power station built at once.
Ashland prospectors have found
a lithia water spring that has a
flow of 25 gallons per minute and
will bottle the product.
A modern vulcanizing plant
will be installed at Salem, April
1st.
After long delays the S. P. Co.
bridge across Coos Bay is at last
agreed upon to be of the swing-

Last week I visited the Olarks Can
vou school, which is undet the direc
tion of Mt. Fraua Mattingly. A
new map of the State ami some new
charts have been added to the equip
ment recently. The pupils are doing
good work.
At the Alpine school. I found the
teacher, Mr. E. W. Hamman, and
twelve pupils busy at work. A new
set of historical charts and a new In
ternational dictionary have been re
cently added to the equ.pment. A
new organ was purchased a short time
ago.
The next school in my line of
march was the school in District No.
38. Miss Opal Briggs is the teacher.
Some new charts, a new jacket for the
stove, and a new desk fur the teacher
have ben added since my former
visit. This school has a good flag,
which was displayed as provided bv
law. The work was moving along
smoothly, and the pupils are inter
ested in their work.
In District No. 50, the teacher, Mr.
C. F. French, and U pupils were
making preparations for an entertain
ment which will be given at the close
of the school. If the practice indi
catcs anything, the entertainment will
be well worth attending. This school
has a new set of historical charts.
The windows are provided with ex
cellent adjustable shades. They are
made of canvas, and while tliev cost
a little more, they will outwear sev
eral ordinary Bhades.
