THANKSGIVING.
Thanksgiving, like Christmas
and some other events, comes
but once a year. To the average
American citizen it suggests vis
ions of roast turkey, roast pig,
cranberry sauce, sweet potatoes
and other luxuries that appeal to
the appetite, engender dyspepsia,
and induce gout and jaundice.
Not because of the inherently
bad or unwholesome qualities of
these articles of food, but because
of the inordinate quantity con
sumed. To others it suggests a time of
revelry, a time for sports as well i
as feasting; the time to throw oft
the cares of business and give
themselves up to unalloyed pleas
ure. To some it is a time for family
reunions, when those who are
scattered far and wide from the
parental roof-tree gather again at
the old home to greet father and
mother, brother and sister, and
thus keep alive and glowing the
embers of filial and fraternal
love. The memories of the past
are called up, many half forgot
ten instances are mentioned,
those who have left the little cir
cle forever are kindly and affect
ionately remembered and the
most sacred of all earthly ties
are strengthened and perpetuat
ed. May such gatherings large
ly increase for they cultivate the
true spirit of Thanksgiving.
To others still, it is distinctive
ly a religious occasion. A time
to meet for public worship of Al
mighty God and give thanks to
Him for the numberless blessings
He has vouchsafed us as in
dividuals and as a Nation. This
is the primary and true object
of the dav. the purpose as set
forth in the proclamations of the i
President of the United States
and the jpve.t on of the several j
siates. When observed in its'
tiue spirit and intent it is of in
ca'cu'able benefit. "Blessed is;
