Morrow County's First Annual Fair.

These exhibits were a source of constant surprise to every visitor; the flowers are rare and beautiful specimens, a
grand century plant looming up in the midst which we all hope to live long enough to see in blossom this will be
only 99 years hence.- The fruits are specimens of nearly every variety known to the Pacific Northwest, and are
from every section of the county. A feast for the eyes and a grand showing of the magnificent resources of our
great county, all gathered from tree and vine in an ordinary season. This will be double discounted another year.

Judge Lowell, Returning
Home, Says Affair Was
Highly Pleasing.

Judge Stephen A. Lowell, who
was in attendance upon the Mor
row County Fair last week at
Heppner, returned home last
evening with commendation of
the complete success of the first
effort of our sister county in hold
ing an agricultural fair. Already
organization is being effected for
a more complete exhibit next
year, and for insuring the per
manency of the institution.
Morrow county has been look
ed upon as distinctively a wool
growing county, but Mr. Lowell
reports agricultural and horti
cultural exhibits to equal those of
any fair in the many he has at
tended. The progressive men
and women there are beginning
to realize that their soil will pro
duce all the productions' of the
temperate zone, and they are dis
couraging bonanza farming and
encouraging the idea of intensive
farming.
The great work of the Minor
Brothers in the breeding of fine
cattle has been a revelation to
hosts of people, while the display
of other farm animals was most
creditable. Next year they pro
pose to have a splendid horse
show in connection with the fair.
The country roads are in terrible
condition because of the long
drought, but the country people
were out in force nevertheless,
and Heppner was crowded with
visitors.
Judge Lowell thinks that next
year Pendleton should honor her
neighboring city with a special
train, and the presence of large
numbers of her citizens, pointing
out that Umatilla county is in
the same legislative district, and
ought to maintain close relations.
Why We Need Alfalfa.
There is no combination of
feeds so economical for the pro
duction of beef, pork, mutton,
butter and eggs, as corn and al
falfa. Neither will give the best
results alone. We need alfalfa
because it balances up the corn
ration and saves the large waste
of starch which always takes
place where corn is fed alone.
We need alfalfa because we can
by means of it grow on our farms
the protein more profitably than
we can buy it in feed stuffs. We
need alfalfa because it feeds the
soil and enables us to grow larg
er crops of corn, wheat and oats.
We need alfalfa because it pro
duces on an average double the
feed value per acre of clover or
any other lorage crop. .Prof.
