Former Heppner Resident
Writes Entertainingly o;
Present Home and Sur
roundings.
Dear Editor:
You, no doubt, aa well as many
others will be ureatlv surprised in
reading this letter written bv one
from whom the most of you have not
lieard for many a clay.
You see I receive the Gazette-Times
eaoh Monday and read the home news
with much interest and some way
during the past few months I have
had a longing to write a letter to be
printed within its columns, to let you
know, both how I appreciate reading
about you all and also about our
whereabouts, eto. During these busy,
rushing, whirling days, we net so
little time to write and exchange
greetiues with relatives and friends.
The only ones irt Heppner from whom
I ever have a personal message are
my brother and his wife. But having
this ODDortnuitv and pleasure each
week of hearing from some of my
girlhood friends, throueh the agency
of "The Gazette-Times", I thought,
perhaps, that you in return would en
joy hearing cf me and mine, at least
once in ten or a dozen years.
It will have been eleven years next
Xmas Kinoe I left mv old home town
Seven years ago this tail we were
home for several weeks on a 'visit as
we were'on our way from Cold Wis
cousin to Sunny California.
My mind is often turned northward
and I long many timns to see tho old
familiar places and faces. Although
to De frank with yon I would not ex
change the cleasuro and the health we
enjov living in the climate of South
ern California with that which we
have had living in othnr climates
We aro perfectly satisfied and care
uever to leave tho southern part of the
Golden State to live elsewhere.
Yon sav that I am not a boostflr of
Morrow county. Whv should I be
now? My brother is (because he has
never lived here). I'll not say more
on that subject for fear, Mr. Editor,
that you will not publish mv lntter
1 know how loyal the most of you are
to Morrow county and rightly so.
Heppner has changed a great deal
and so has its people since I was
there. Many of the dear friends and
yes some loved ones too have gone on
to their eternal reward. Some have
married and settled down right around
their home nests. Others have moved
into different climates and surround
ing, simenear and some far away
from relatives and friends, gone
anions; strangers as I have done.
Yhi!e the rest, who do not at present
live among the hills of HeoDner and
its vicinity, have, I understand, be
come "Webfooters" aud have sought
the wet streets of Portland. Don't
tell them that I said so you know I
spent a few years in the Willamette
Valley mv.seif and enjoyed them, too;
in fact, the wens have not all yet dis
appeared from between mv toes. It
was there within the halls of old
Fortland University that J met my
fate. I have fond recollections cf
Fortland and especially so of Univer
aity Park. Mr. Wentworth, I think,
would say the same, at least, he
would hate to sav otherwise, even if
he does not like so much rain. You
ought to see the California!) stay in
when a few drops of rain fall. They
seem to think that a cloud has burst
ed. I see many strange names in "The
Gnzette-Tiuies" which by the wav
has changed its name too: still there
are some very familiar names men
tioned in each issue. I always enjoy
reading its pages.
When Mr. Shutt was editor of
"The Times' I of ten'sent "University
Notes" to him to pay my subscription
fee for the home news while I was in
attendance at the University. This,
of course, strengthened my interest in
the home paper and, no doubt, is the
source that now, atter the elapse of
nearly eleven busy, flying years,
prompts me once more to speak
through its agency to my home folks.
I will refrain from further retro
spect. Although the memories of
home and my girlhood days are ever
eweet to my mind, the memories of
today will be just as sweet, yea,
sweeter tomorrow than those of yester
day are today.
I, with my congenial companion
and five dear, lively children, are
happily located in the city of Corona,
which is the second largest city in
Riverside connty, having a population
of six thousand inhabitants. Corona
is a Spanish name and means a crown.
The couutry around about ns is
vary bfautiful indeed-the valley
with its large orange and lemon
proves ; its vast fielda of grain and
alfalfa which yields on an average of
nine tons per acre annually and its
creen meadows creeping up to the
foothills with the mountains and some age,
magnificent study for any artist's eye.
Corona hears the distinction of be
ing the largest shipping point of lem
ons in the Unitod States. It is locat
ed fifteen miles south ' of Riverside
and fifteen miles east of Los Angeles.
It is often called the "Circle City"
on account of the Circular Boulevard
which is one hundred feet wide and
three miles in olrcumferenoe and which
encirles the main part of the citv.
This brands it as very different from
any other city. The boulevard is be
ing macadamized and now is close to
completion.
The World's Automobile mind is
being centered at present on this per
fect circle boulevard as a speedway.
In fact all arrangements have been
made for an automobile meet on Sep
tember ninth, Admission Day. (16,
000.00 have been raised for prizes and
some trophies have been put up.
Great interest is being taken by all
of the cities around about and all are
in great expeetanoy that the world's
aneed record will be broken on this
track. Barney Oltlfield and other
national speeders have driven over the
oourse and have declared it to be an
ideal speedway.
You see that we have some exofte
nient ahead of ns, but not sucli rinkv,
road-race excitement as that of the
Fourth of July race from Los Angeles
to Sacramento.
I am very thankful, howover, that
we live three blocks off of the Boule
vard. In Santa Monica, we lived
only one-half of a block from the race
course and the noise of the practising
for several mornings aud then of the
race all day, nearly drove us mad.
Corona has good schools, 'churches,
a tine new (Jity Man witn an auto nre
engine, a nice city rark in its in
fancy, lovely homes aud nu saloons.
The people are a very congenial peo
ple to live among.
Next conference, which meets at
Long Beach the first week in October,
I beleve, we close our second year
here and expect to be returned for oar
third year. Our church ha; a mem
bership now of almost five hundred
and a fine gtaJed Sunday school witli j
an average attendance of two hundred
and sixty three. We have a nice lot
of young people in our League. Not
long go the League gave a banquet at
which sixty young folks were placed.
Our ladies have three good societies.
Last May our Woman's Foreign Miss
ionary Society entertained the San
Diego District Convention of ' that
Society and had a very graoiona time.
The Brotherhood, too, is a flourish
ing organization. They had a "lawn
party " in the early spring and as a
result from that party, the church
grounds are now beautified by a lovely
green lawn. They worked hard for
it. The children, too have their
society and take great interest in it.
Last fall the parsonage was trans
formed into a modern home which we,
of couise greatly enjoy and appreciate.
The winter has been a very busy
and prosperous one in the history of
the church an! consequently very
busy and profitable for us. The sum
mer rlavs promise as much activity as
those of the winter.
Just now Mr. Wentworth and I are
taking life easy for the space of about
three weeks. We are on our vaca
tion, visiting friends in Berkley , Oak-
and, San Francisco, Pasadena, Long
Beach aud Los Angele. This is the
first time since we took our "bridal
tour," that we have taken a trip by
ourselves.
Since being here I have had the
delightful plensure of calling on two
of my Heppner school chums, Mis.
Jennie McCarter and Mrs. Lutie
Young, botli now of Oakland. The
first time since my wedding that I had
seen ' any of my Heppner school
friends. It seemed good and recalled
many fond recollections Do you
wonder that 1 feel young once again,
and nm tninking of home and girlhood
friends? We first planned a trip far
ther north to visit Eugene, Portland
and Heppner, bat our time and purse
became limited.
The other day we were over to visit
the World's Fair grounds. One build
ing Is completed. The Machinery
Hall is up in frame. It is a high
building composed of eight million
feet of lumber and eight thousand
tons of bolts; is one thousand feet
long, three hundred feet wide aud
about one hundred aud fifty feet high.
There are two thousand men at work
now and in twojweekthere will be six
thousand at work and sixteen new
buildings started. The information
was given to us by one or tne neau
men on the grounds. It certainly
will pay vou to commence now to save
ud your money to visit ban f rancisco
and San Diego in 1915.
This was my first visit to San
Fraucisco since 1900, when a party
including my parents, Miss Anna Bal-
singer, Mrs. Albert Slocum and my
self attended an Kpworth League Con
vention there.
Before closing this lengthy letter
allow me to add a few words concern
ing the roost interesting feature, and
perhaps the most trying of patience,
iu our lives. I now refer to our
childien. Lucile will be ten years
old next Jan. and is large for her
Next fall she enters the fourth
