We desire to f urthe'r urge this matter at this time and to spur up our business men to the point of getting busy and starting something. The prizes should be arranged at once and announcement made, and the further details can then be ar ranged. It is time to move. This is the season when our farmers and ranchers are gather ing in their grains, fruits and vegetables, and it is the proper time, also, to lay aside some of the choice productions for exhibit purposes. The Morrow-Umatilla Fair is coming on soon, and a little later is the Tri-County Fair at Condon, both enterprises that should claim our especial , at tention in the way of suitable ex hibits. May we not urge that each farmer and rancher take a little time to prepare their grains, fruits and vegetables for these fairs. You are all busy, we know and on this account may not be giving this matter much thought yet there never was a better year to put our county be fore the outside world, and there is no better way of doing this than by an exhibit at these fairs of our products. C. HAYES, Sheriff and Tax Collector. After a lingering illness lasting for a little over four weeks. Vera May, daughter of Edward and Maggie Hunt, of Heppner, passed away on Tuesday morning at the Heppner Sanatorium. She was sick' with typhoid, complicated with sciatica, and all that medi cal skill and good nursing could do was done for her but to no purpose and the end came quietly during the morning hours. Vera May was the only daughter of these good people, and was just budding into young womanhood, being 15 years, 11 months and 4 days old. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. V. Craw- ! ford at the Christian church on Wednesday afternoon, being very largely attended by friends of the family both from town and coun try. There were many beautiful floral offerings, and tho the ser vices were simple they were very impressive. The sorrowing par ents have the sincere sympathy of the community in their sad be reavement. H. E. Warren came in from Spray on Tuesday where he had been for some time looking after ranch interests that he still has over there. Cohn departed yes terday morning for Portland to lay in her fall and winter stock of millinery.- She expects to be absent for several weeks. E. R. Geise was over from Spray this week on business. Card of Thanks. We wish to extend our sincere thanks to the people of Heppner and to our neighbors as well, who so kindly assisted us during the sickness and burial of our daugh ter, Vera May.
