Loui3 J. Gates, grain merchant of
The Dalles, was a visitor here Fri
day. George Beardsley, of Arlington,
wa3 a visitor in Heppner during the
week.
Mr. and Mrs. Andy Rood went to
Tortland Saturday and expected to
return this evening.
George Wilson, of Cecil, was in
town a couple of days the last of
trie week visiting friends.
Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Beymer re
turned from Portland Friday where
Ihey spent a week on a business and
pleasure visit.
Announcement is made by the
committee in charge that the Hepp
ner Chautauqua will be held on June
30 to July 5, inclusive.
Everett Pattison came-out from
Portland Friday evening for a day's
visit with his home folks. He re
turned to the city Sunday afternoon.

Mr. Walter C. Dobyns and Miss
Esther Peterson, both of the lone
t-ection, were married here Sunday
at the home of Rev. W. 0. Living
stone. W. B. Barratt has sold some 2,
060 mixed lambs to Tom Boylen, or
Pendleton, for delivery later in the
summer. The price was 10 cents a
I-ound.
Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Ayers and Mrs.
Anna Spencer returned from Hot
Lake Saturday, where they spent a
few days last week. Mr3. Ayers and
Mrs. Spencer both returned im
proved in health.

Miss Mildren Miller, who is with
the firm of. H. Liebes & Co., of
Portland, is spending a few days in
Heppner with her sister, Mrs. Ray
Moore, who has- been ill for some
time. Mrs. Moore will probably re
turn to Portland with her sister and
fpend the summer there.

Rev. Clark M. Smith, of The
Dalies, missionary for the American
Sunday School Union, was in this
county last week looking after his
work In the various communities.
Mr. Smith held a meeting at Fair
view school Wednesday evening with
41 in attendance. He also held a
meeting at Hardman Thursday night
and at Morgan Friday night.
W. T. Matlock, sheepman of Al
derdale, was in town for a few day3
during the week, leaving for home
this norning. The dog poisoner has
been at work on Mr. Matlock's range
in Washington and his trained sheep
dogs were all killed. He came here
to recruit a new outfit and took a
car load home iwth him.

ies. M. C. "Mike" Marshall, the well
known sheep and hay man of
Doardman, wa3 in town last Wed
nesday attending to business mat
ters. Mr. Marshall has one of the
largest and best hay ranches on the
Hoard man project and is also engag
ed in the 3heep business. He has
been in this country 21 years, has
worked hard, and acquired consid
erable property but, he says, he is
not as well fixed now as he was five
years ago because of the deflation of
ihe sheeumen and farmers. "Some
thing rotten, somewhere," is the way
he sizes things up.
