ISowerman & Kavanaugh, Portland is
here this week on business before
the circuit court.
Extensive repairs have been made
recently on the Methodic church, in
eluding a new floor in the basement,
concrete work on the foundation and
repairs on the belfry.
F. A. McMenamin is here from
Portland attending circuit court. Mr.
McMenamin is attorney for Alvin
Strait, charged with an assault with
intent to kill.

Mrs. Walter Cason was in town
for a short time Saturday, having
been called from Portland to lone on
account of the illness of her mother.
She will return to Portland in a day
or two, her mother being much im
proved. S. II. Boardman, of the live town
bearing his name, is here this week

Boardman is in charge of the high
way repair work between here and
the Junction.

Phelps are here from, Pendleton, the

days, while Mr. Van Vactor Is at

cuit court. Mrs. Van Vac'.or Is also
busy calling on old friends and

George Krebs, well known Cecil
stockman, reports that their sheep
nre coming In from the upper coun
try and feeding will start soon. Feed
on the range near Cfdl Is not good
on account of h'.ck of moisture early
In the seasou. Recent rains have been
plentiful but the weather Is too cold
for grass to grow well.
Mrs. F. It.- SpnuUling returned
trom Hood river Friday, where she
was called two woelu ago by the
death of her father, K. W. Winans.
Mr. Winans waa Just past 98 years
ef age and was native of New York
City. He resided In Illinois until
IfcNti, when lie removed to Oregon.
Besides Mrs. flnauldlng he is sur--iiyd
by one other daughter and
four sons.
Mike Marshall, sheepman ami al
falfa grower of Boardman, was in
towu Saturday on a short business
trip. Mr. Marshull says llepptier Is
all right ns a good county seat town
to visit once in a while, but whin
it conies to every day living 11 road -miiu
has the world beaten. "It's
the place," he declared, "where al
falfa is bigger, cream more golden,
honey sweeter, girls prettier and the
climate better than any other spot
in the known world." Mike argues
that he Is not a Boardman booster
but onlv a seller of the plain, un
varnished truth about his home
town.
County Court Proceedings
tor the December Terra
Court met In regular session at
the Court House In Heppner, Ore
gon, with all members present, on
Wednesday,, Dec. 6, 1923, when the
following proceedings were had, to-wlt:
Court approved, continued or re
jected the various claims presented
against the county as per notations
on the face of each claim.
Court canvassedr the r,esult of the
vote In Road District No. 1 for spe
cial tax levy of 5 mills and found
the result tot be 19 votes to none In
favor of said tax.
Court canvassed the result of the
vote In road district No. 2 for spe
cial tax levy of 8 mills and found
the result to be 24 votes in favor of
said tax and 13 votes against.
Court ordered the balance of Bond
money to be transferred to G.eneral
Road Fund for the credit of Hepp
ner Hardman Bond Fund.
The assessor was instructed to ex
tend on the tax roll for the coming
year the Fire Patrol tax as submit
ted by the State Forester.
An agreement was entered into
with the City of Heppner for the use
of the County jail for city prisoners
for a period of one year, upon pay
ment by the city of the sum of $1.

Mr. and Mrs. George Krebs and
their twin sons were visitors from
Cecil Saturday. The boys were one
year old that day and going strong
and in celebration of the event the
youngsters had their pictures taken.

derson, a private detective, sought
for more than ninety days in a coast
wide search as a suspect in the kid
naping of Frank Smith on the night
of September 1, has been arrested
and placed under $2,500 bonds to
appear before the Gilliam county
grand jury.
Henderson, who says his true
name is H. H. Stile, was arrested at
Arlington .early yesterday morning
by Deputy Sheriffs Neal J. Boyle and
oy Montague. He is said to have ad
mitted he was in the employ of the
local Klan, when Smith was kid
naped. It is charged Stil or Henderson
is the detective who posed as a state
officer and "arrested" Frank Smith
near Clem on the afternoon of Sep
tember 1, and took him to Pendle
ton on a charge of shooting up the
Klan hall in Condon. The warrant
was sworn to before Justice of the
Peace W. A. Darling at Condon.
When the arrest was made Stile
declared they wer going to takb
their prisoner to Condon, but when
the John Day highway waa reached,
instead of turning south to Condon,
Stile and L. E. Fry, who was driv
ing the car, turned north to Arling
ton, wher,e they put Smith in jail
and later took him to Pendleton,
where he was again locked in jail
and given a "third degree."
Stilp is formally charged with kid
naping, along with G. A. Chaney, the
admitted leader of the Klan in Con
dondon, L. E. Fry, Floyd Dunlap,
Jane Doe Anderson and a party un
known. The matter ia now in che
hands of the Gilliam county grand
jury.
