Worthless
How many investments have you made
in securities that are now worthless?
Who of us has not at some time or other
bought some stock or other security that
now carries no value?
There "will always be money lost in
tvorthless speculation, but we can at least
:ry to bring these costly adventures to a
minimum. J , . n K;;
The best way is to consult your banker
jefore purchasing unproven securities.

R. E. Alstott, sr., was in from, his
Rhea creek ranch Saturday sizing up
the -ways of town folks and congrat
ulating himself about the weather.
Mr. Alstott, besides being1 one of the
best farmers in the county, is some
what of a philosopher to boot and re
fuses to waste his time worrying
about things he can't help, He
doesn't look at his fruit buds every
time the frost goes out of the ground
to see if they are swelling and get
ting ready to get killed next time
freezes he just waits till mid-summer
and if he has no fruit he can
decide that maybe the freezing got
the buds, but he hasn't lost the joy
out of life for several months worry
ing about it.

Rex Ingram Planned to Film "The
Conquering Power' 5 Years Ago'
It was nearly five years ago that
Rex Ingiam, then an extremely
youthful director, first suggested
filming the story now produced by
.Metro as "The Conquering Power,"
with Alice Terry and Itodolph Val
eutino in leading roles, at the Star
theatre, Saturday, January G.
"And who is this wonderful story
by?" asked the studio manager of the
concern by whom Ingram was em
ployed. "Balzac," was the reply.
"H'm," mused the studio mana
ger. "Has this Balzac had much story
experience?"
"He's pretty favorably known," re
plied Ingram.
"And how much does he want for
the story?"
"It costs us nothing," said Ingram.
"You see "
"That's enough," interrupted the
studio manager. "I've heard of these
'for nothing' stories before. We don't
take it. You never get nothing for
nothing, young man."
Which is one reason the most pow
erful story from the pen of the mas
ter of fiction has waited until today
to be translated into the language of
the camera.
But Mr. Ingram was not to be
turned from his desire to translate
the famed story of money and love to
the screen and when he had complet
ed his sensationally successful ver
sion of "The Four Horsemen of the
Apocalypse," he desired to start work
upon "Eugene Grandet," which was
given the title of "The Conquering
Power."
Those same artistic ideas wrhich he
had applied with such telling effect
in making "The Four Horsemen" he
used in working out his unusual ver
sion of Balzac's novel.
NORTHWEST LEADS IX
VETERA RELIEF WORK
With 1154 injured World War vet
erans of this district rehabilitated,
the Pacific Northwest section of the
United States Veterans' bureau leads
all other districts of the country in
the number of vocationally rebuilt
former service people as compared
with the number entering training.
This announcement was made by L.
C. Jesseph, northwest district mana
ger of the bureau, who stated that
there are 2767 others in training at
the txp.-nse of the govern men! now.
Only veterans who received disabili
ties in war service which pre rente;;
them from resuming their pre-war
vocations were awarded training.
This district which includes Wash
ington, Oregon Idaho is also one of
the two leaders in the United States
in expeditions adjudication of com
pensation claims, Mr. Jesseph stated.
Only 476 such claims out of a total
of 14,347 filed by veterans in the
district are pending action at tin
present time. Thist is three per cent
plus of the total number. With less
than one per cent of its mail unans
wered, the northwest district of the
berbureau leads all others in the mat
ter of prompt answering of corres
pondence when this work was check
ed throughout the country recently.
There are 762 disabled war vet
erans hospitalized in this district at
the present time, a slight decrease
under the number in hospitals in Oc
tober. The peak of hospitalization
was reached early in the spring of
thst year. Mental, nervous" tubercu
losis cases are still increasing, it was
staled.

Freakiest Freak Play.
Here is the freakiest of freak
plays that, It is suid, took place
In the Blue Illdge league. It Is
alleged to be a triple play In
which not one member of the
defending side touched the ball.
While It apparently violates a
flock of baseball rules, never
theless it Is worth printing.
One team had runners on first
and second with nobody out.
The batsman hit an Infield fly,
and the umpire cnlled him out
under the rules. The infield fly
In descending hit the head of
the runner on second, and he
was declared out by the umpire.
The ball rolled toward first
base, and the base runner, who
was there, In disgust, picked It
up and threw it to the outfield.
He was declared out for Inter
ference, making three outs with
out a player In the field touch
ing the bull.
It Is said that the decision of
the mnp went, although It is a
question whether it could be
called a continuous piny. Neither
Is It certain that nn umpire
would declare n base runner out
for being lilt by an Infield fly
after he bad called "infield fly."
Yet a ball Is not necessarily
out of play on nn Infield fly, fur
the rule says that any runner
trying to advance on an Infield
fly does so at his own risk.

7.ACTICES IN BUSH LEAGUES
Manager Mora Bent on Winning Games
by Trickery Than Developing
Young Players.
The minor leagues produced few
good ball players the last summer
few good ones that the big leagues
wanted. A critic points out that In
many of the minors the former big
leaguers who act as managers are
more Interested In winning games by
anything they can get away with than
In polishing up some diamond In the
rough who would make good In th I
majors. For Instance, pitchers In the j
smaller minors adopt certain Illegal I
motions and get away with them.
These same men In the big leagues
are required to pitch legally, which is !
one reason they do not show with the i
same eclut as when they were in the
bushes. j
FEDERATED CHURCH
J. U. L. Haslam, Pastor.

Sermon 11a. m. and 7:30 p. .
Christian Endeavor 6:30 p. m.
With the many blessings God has
given us in the past year as a church
we feel better fitted for the task of
1923. Again on Sunday night God
blessed us with precious souls which
adds to our responsibility as a
church.
Never a year offered such oppor
tunities as this year of 1923, and
with our loyal young people who are
doing so remarkable in God's service,
we feel many of these opportunities
will be grasped and great things ac
complished in the name of Christ for
His honor and glory.
Why the stir in the church and so
many accepting Christ? Because of
the many who are busy, finding time
for prayer. Attend our Tuesday or
Thursday night prayer meetings and
you will see w-hy it is.
We are having good evangelistic
services every Sunday night. Special
music, lively singing, and best of all,
the presence of the Holy Spirit.
Next Sunday night the Men's Gos
pel Team will be organized. God
has great things in store for these
Christian men and young men.
Start in the new year right by be
ing present at church next Sunday.
