EASTERN OREGON SHEEPMAN
MAKES GOOD AS HOTEL MAN
(DeWitt Harry in Oregonian)
If ever you're in New York go
the Waldorf-Astoria and Roy Caru
thers will give you a royal welcome.
Roy likes anyone from Oregon.
got his start running sheep about
miles below Huntington.
Caruthers' story is one demonstrat
ing ability. A couple of years ago
the Washington hotel in Weiser was
in difficulties. The management did
not seem to be able to make it pay.
Caruthers was induced to leave his
ranch and take charge. He had never
had anything to do with a hotel be
fore, except to pay for services ren
dered. He was a sheepman, but
came off the Huntington ranch, saw
the Weiser hotel and conquered the
difficulties.
. The next year, when the board c
directors of the Palace hotel in San
Francisco were in search of a mana
ger they offered Caruthers such an
excellent contract that he would not
refuse, and the Oregon rancher re
peated his Idaho success in Califor
nia. And last year he was called to
New York, installed as manager of
the Waldorf-Astoria, the hotel that
pays a million dollars a year rental
before it begins to take in any money
for itself.
Caruthers has made another not
able success, but with all that he
hankers for Oregon and nothing de
lights him more than to find some
Oregonian in the hotel and show him
a fine time and hear the latest news
from home.
