Hill Curtis vigorously ii ! 1 the oh
Ftubby brush broom to his well-worn
huit, then stopped lor a moment to
out across the great green liehls.
For 50 .years, weather permitting,
Bill had watched it rl !oed this time
of duy, when the snu was casting its
last slanting rays.
Tonight he was leaving the home he
loved so well ana the man who had
)iured Ids home and with whom lie
had worked for 30 years. That was
the hard part of going. Something
Umt looked suspiciously like tears
welled up in his honest blue eyes, and
lie gazed for a minute at the man at
the sink, doing up the supper dishes'.
As a rule this man was talkative, hut
tonight he was strangely sHent.
The arduous task of making an M
suit look something like new was Dual
ly completed and liill stepped out on
the little platform that served as a
piazza, lie looked sadly ut the two
tiiity arm chairs.
"At the end of two days' Journey
1 will he with Mnrcia again," and
mice more he could see the Utile white
clad figure as he left her Unit last
evening. Again he could hear the
Knft sobbing as she begged him not
to be away long, and Hill held her
close as lie whispered:
"When I have made the little fortune
I liuve dreamed of, then I will come
hack to you. And when I do come
back, Marclu, It will be In lllac-tlme,
Just like It Is today."
The first few weAs had been tin
tiearable to Hill; then as the months
and years passed he fell into that
rut of being perfectly satisfied with
working hard all day and spending
the long evenings with his faithful
companion and his pipe.
His little pile of money grew blg
ser each year until he at last decided
It was time to go back to the old home
and Manila. His heart beat faster
as he pictured the little vision In white,
mid he sighed happily as lie again
entered the little cottage. Hut his
uplrlts drooped when he beheld Jim,
Kitting with his head resting In his
two hands, a picture of despair, do
ing over, he placed his hand on Jim's
shoulder and said:
"We've spent some very happy years
here, old wont, but now 1 must be
suing back to Marclu. I wish you
ould see her, Jim so email, with
vuvy tresses and "
"Yes, hut 30 years makes an awful
difference, old mun," Jim answered.
"Ses, yes," Hill murmured, hulf uu
HMitly; "In noma people, but not Mur
ofcl." At last the time came when the
'ouirdes parted. Jim drove 11 i II over
the two miles to the railroad station,
and they silently pressed each other's
hand, or neither could speak Just
then,
Jim drove back to the lonely cot
tage, seated himself In Ids arm chair
beside the vacant one, and when the
big full moon arone Its beams full on
tme loiu4y llgure, and an empty chair.
In tne meantime the train sped on
towards Hill's old home and Mania.
Jlis Journey ended at noon two days
later, hut as Hill felt terribly roman
tic, he widted until the sun was set
ting, then Marclu must see him llrst
by the llhie hush near her door. As
he Honied the house he wished he had
kept corresponding all these years;
hut then, he felt wire Marclu loved
him enough to watch and wojt for
him even though It was sixteen years.
He was almost at the gale when a
Midden fear took possession of him.
Things did not look Just right. What
if Mania hud gone away, or had died;
hut no, he must put such thoughts
away. At the gate u piercing screiim
reached his ear Just as he was by
the lilac tree, where Marclu must see
him llrst and two ditty-faced boys
came rushing around the corner of the
house, the larger one finally overtak
ing the other, and they Immediately
started a list tight.
( The door of the house opened quick
ly, and a woman, one who would eas
ily Hp the scales at two hundred, ap
peared in a soiled gingham dress,
sleeves lolled to her elbows, exhibit
ing a pair of fat red arms thickly cov
ered with white suds, and the equally
jvd face sliow, d plainly she had Just
emerged from the family washtuh.
Hill rubbed his eyes and looked
again. There niiulit .ItM hao been
