MOONSHINE CAM:
IS CAPTURED
Some Improvements Needed.
Another of Morrow county's "in
fant industries" has been nipped in
the bud. While Sheriff George Mc
Duffee is a good official, a pleasant
gr itleman and something of a
stickler for law enforcement there
are those who say that as a promotor
of certain manufacturing industries
in Morrow county he is a decided
frost. Likewise E. M. Shutt, who
aspires to step into McDui'fee's shoes
after the next election, but who has
recently been urging everybody to
grab every dollar in sight with which
to buy Liberty Bonds, joins hands
with the sheriff and helps to put out
of commission, or at least indefinitely
postpone, a business that might have
enabled its owner, had he been
allowed to operate a little longer, to
have taken up Morrow county's
entire quota. Also County Agri
cultural Agent Brown, a man who is
supposed to promote every branch of
agriculture in the county, joins with
the other two and takes an awful
fall out of the corn meal business.
Sheriff McDuffee, it appears, got
a hunch that. Joe Hardy was oper
ating a moonshine still in a still,
quiet nook up" on the east prong of
Willow creek and the way the thing
turned out proved that bis hunch
was not all "moonshine." Joe's
still was either too handy to the
sheriff's oflice or he failed to keep
his business still enough for last
Sunday McDuffee with Shutt and
Brown drove up the creek some 23
miles and started a still hunt for a
still. It was still daylight when
after creeping thru the brush for
some time the stillness of the
mountains was broken by the dirp,
dropping of moonshine from the
still. Hoping that Handy was still
handy around the place the trio
closed In only to find that he had
finished his day's work and gone
away. The fire still burned and the
oil of joy was still dripping from the
still and several gallons of Handy's
handiwork was in evidence but Mr.
Handy was conspicuous by his
absence.
The sheriff and his party then
withdrew to a point of vantage and
Btarted to wait for the proprietor's
return and "Oft in the Stilly, (like
wise chilly) Night" that followed
they may have yearned for a nip of
that warm, heartsonie fluid that still
drip-dropped from the still. We
don't know. Still, many ' folk
would.
Next morning when Handy, ra
turned to take up liln 'dally toll In
the Interest of the conservation of
real moisture In dry old Oregon the
watchers fathered him In- lit .the
point of t-o wlifrwli'R Mr kutio." Joe
admitted that he was so scared for a
nilnur that I' dUn't know his own
name but after ha recovered li
found that lie was still Handy and
tl.o 23 gallons of "whlta mule" In
stock showed that lie had a mighty
handy still.
The place wan well delected for
R'luded operation. A fine spring
supplied the wuter for cooling the
"worm" and the camp wan so
camouflaged with trees and brush as
not to be easily discovered. The
plant was of 15 gallon per day
capacity and for several months li
been kept busy supplying moisture
for the thirsty. Fifteen gallons of
the boote was emptied Into the
creek and it ts Mid the fish up that
var have been having a big time
Handy says he will plead guilty
when brought to trial. He Is In the
county Jail but will probably be
taken to Portland In a day or two
ml turned over to the federal
authorities.
Immediate attention of the city
officials of Hdppner Is hereby direct
ed to the need for. cross-walks at
some of the street intersections. A
good example to cite may bs found
at the corner of May and Chase
streets between the old Eastern
hotel property and the Ayres corner.
The plank crossing at the corner
was torn out last spring when the
street improvement work started
and all summer the dust in that hole
was ankle deep. When it rains a
pond the full width of the street
forms making the crossing impracti
cable without hip boots. People
living out that way are getting
pretty tired of this condition and
they have a right to expect that
immediate relief will be given by
those in authority. If there is an
official in the town whose duty it is
to keep cross walks in a passable
condition he should get busy at
once, or the mayor or street com
mittee should get busy at getting
him busy. If there is no such offi
cial on the city roster one should be
created at once. Heppner people are
bound to suffer some discomfort the
coming winter because of the lack
of sidewalks in the burnt district
but those in authority should give
them a chance to get across the
streets without swimming.
