The Albany School Teacher Acquitted.
The case of the state against Emma
Harden, the school teacher, charged
with aBsault upou a pupil, Neva Look'
Ingblll, wus terminated awhile before
10 o'clock Saturday night. The closing
arguments were made by Judge Whit
ney and Hou, J. M. Somers for the
prosecution and L. M. Curl and Percy
Kelley for the defendant. The Justice
charged the Jury giving them a wide
latitude In reference to law and fact.
The Jury was gone from the box Just
seven minutes, rendering a verdict of
not guilty. It was received with a
loud cheer, showing the sympathy of
the large audience to be with the de
fendant, and many flocked around her
with congratulations. Thus ended the
only school teacher whipping trial in
Albany for at least sixteen years, If not
in Its history. It certainly Is to be
hoped it is the last. Albany Demo.
crat.
Although the Democrat says the
verdict "was received with a loud
cheer, showing tbe sympathy of the
large audience to be with the defend
ant," we believe the general sentiment
to be against severe corporal punish
ment. The famous verdict once given
bye Jury, "not guilty, but don't doit
again," would probably best express
the general sentiment In regard to the
Albany case.
