William Boone brought a curiosity

Mrs. Mary Willy was arrested in
Tillamook last week, as she and her
husband were about to alart for Ohio,
charged by Alfred Williams with hav
ing forged the name of Mrs. Paul
Scurader to tut order for II. The ar
rest created quite a sensation In Tilla
mook, hut, after an investigation, the
charge was dismissed.
The Sheepmen's Union, of Gilliam
county, is being urged by the Fossil
Journal to put the bounty on coyote
senilis back to the old figures, $1 by
the union and Jl by theoounty. The
union recently voted in favor of pay
ing 60 cents and that the county
should pay 50 cents. The law does
not permit the couuty court to pay lees
than (1.
A deed was filed lu the clerk's
oftloe in The Dalles recently grantiug
title to half a block In the town of
Du,fur to the United Brethren church,
and in ihe deed was a covenant that,
should the grantees sell, cause to be
sold or give away, any intoxicating
liquors on the premises, the land shall
revert to Ilia grantors. It is not pre
sumed the church oontemplateB engag
ing in the liquor traffic; however, the

A strange Btory comes from the
country north and east of Stayton a
few miles, in which It isstited that a
man named Popple was stricken
suddenly blind last week, while work-
ins In the hopflelds, says the Htayton
Mail. It Is reported that Popple
called out to his companions that he
could not see, aud was at once con
ducted to his home and medical aid
summoned. The unfortunate uinu
was apparautly stone blind. He was
taken to Han Francisco for treatment.

From Tennessee.
The literary last Saturday night
was well attended. The question,
"Resolved that the works of Art are
more pleasing to the eye of man than
the works or N ilurc," was ably dis
cussed, with Thomas MeKnlgbt as
leader oj the affirmative and John
Swlnk on the negative. The decision
was lu favor of the affirmative.
The entertainment given at this
place by the school, assisted by the
literary society and the public in
general, was a success In every par
ticular. All those who took part did
well, A recitation by Jerome Mo-
Cully, of Sodavllle, was highly appre
ciated by all, and brought down the
house. He was recalled and sang
"Home, Sweet Home," with varia
tions, in which be displayed great
musical talent. Excellent recitations
by Chas. and Will Ross, and Miss
Pearl and Mastei Robert Wallace the
latter two, of Albany were also high
ly appreciated. We desire to extend
our heartiest thanks to all those out
side of the school and society who so
kinily assisted us. The proceeds of
(he nlertainment were used to finish
paying for the organ, and a nice hang
ing tlamp was 'also bought for the
school house. The school house nnd
furulture are now second to none In
the county. The organ, which cost
$06 00, was bought June 27, Km, and
through the energetic efforts of the
teacher, Miss Annie Blacklaw, and the
penuje of this district, the debt has
been entirely canceled, Great credit
is due Miss Blacklaw for her efforts lu
this direction. Observer.
