The public has seemed to forget
that Grover Cleveland will be
president of the United States for
r few mouth longer.
The Oregonian is preparing for
a bitter fight against Senator
Mitchell' return lo the U. S.
nenate. Joseph Simon is the
papers choice- Mercury.
It is to be hoped that the law
will be lenient with the New York
man who fled from the widow he
had married because the ghosts of
her three former husbands ap
peared to him.
The hobo question is one the
next legislature should try and
settle so far as Oregon is concern I 0 will hat-sonr soup v fish.

cities, though it need nut apply to
the rural dUricta. The supreme
court, by a two to one opinion, de
fided such a law unconstitutional
s iiw years ago, but might reverse j
that decision now, as some of the!
bent lawyers consider the law un- j
obnoxious to the constitution. If
the next legislature heeds public
opinion it will pass a registration
law.
The -mortgage tax law should
be re-enacted by the coming legis
lature, and an honest exemption
for indebtedness clause should,
also, be a part of the new assess
ment law. Tne present system of
assessing is the most iniquitous and
unjust law that ever disgraced the
statute books of any state, and was
passed solely for the purpose of
exempting from taxation the
foreign loan companies, shifting
from their shouldera to thosecf the
debt oppressed, tb,e burdeus of
government. .
The growing of Angora goats as
a means jf profit is right now be
ing agitated in many part of
Oregon. There is always a ready
demand rr mohair and at prices
very satisfactory. At Indepen
dence an association was formed
last week, which baa as its object
the improvement of the mohair
industry in every way possible.
The association is not intended to
confine its work to any particular
locality, but is ready to reach nut j
with all information necessary to ;
any part of the state where enthu
siasm in the practically new
industry is made manifest.

The next legislature, if it can
possibly resist the alluring "argu

abolish the system of compulsory

Here is an actual conversation which
occurred in a Philadelphia restaurant
between an American and an English
man, both of full age, and one s voter,
says the Standard:
American Bow long have you been
in this country?
Englishman About two years and a
half.
American How far from London did
yon live?
Englishman Ei crht in London; that
la, they call it London. Old London
was surrounded by e wall, and was no
bigger than Philadelphia. The wall was
built by the Ilomans when they occu
pied that part of England.
American Is that so? How long ago
was, t;.;;l?
Eugiishman Oh, about cijrht hun
dred years or so, in the time of William
the Conqueror.
American 1 didn't know the Romans
ever lived in England. Was that wall
all aronnd the city?
Englishman Yea, with several gates
in it, which ware shut at night,
American What was that about?
Wasn't there a king named George III,
who tried to conquer America uud
didn't succeed? That was the time of
the revolution. They had trouble, the
English and Americans, up to 1812 or
1S14.
Englishman Yes, I believe there w as
something of that kind.
American Isn't London on a river?
Englishman Yes, on the Thames.

A writer tn the Juneau City Aftntno
rd gives a graphic dewripuon of oxpori
eaces while in the recent prospecting tour
in Alaska: Oa the morning of July B, he
ays, we left Douglas Cltv on the favorite
and fast-sailing ctuioe lliak. Captain Jim
(both well and favorably known in Alaskan
waters) for a prosnectmsr trip in Lynn
Canal As the day was tiue and the wind
fair the sail through Gasttucnux. Stephens'
passage and hynu Canal was deliphtful, as
eaclapio is dotted with little tslaads, rising
from the water's edge to a height of a
thousand feet or mora, whilst the mountains
on the mainland are thousands of feet high,
with ragged peaks not unlike the teeth of
an old-faahioned cross-cut saw, the space
between the peaks being tilled with glaciers
and tne peaks themselves are covered with
perpetual snow. As I am a chce-chtuw in
the country(that's what my chums call mei,
every thingappearai wild and picturesque,
and as I burst out in exclamations of admir
ation every once in a while at the scenery,
they would say: " Oa, suueka ! that ain't
nothing; you bad ought to see the scenery
on the Yukon."
The first night we camped on a creek
about thirty miles from Juneau, where our
native told us there was some quartz. We
stayed and examined It, but did uot think
enough of it to locate it The next day we
arrived at our native's illahee (oa he called
it) , situated at Lynn Canal and distant abmi t
forty miles from Juneau. It is a beautiful
bay, fitted with many islauds and teeming
with iisb, from the mighty whale to thu tiny
herring, while the woods and mountuins are
full of Rame tho small and harmless
ground-hog and the large and fierce brown
bear.
The Indian who accompanied us is a flue
specimen of his race; heatandsoversixfeet
in his bare feet, and weighs over two bun
dred pounds. He is a Mormon in procliv
ities, for he has a number of wives, who ap
pear well satisfied with him as their lord
and master, and 1 could see no sifm of the
green-eyed monster. He is a bear hunter
by occupation, and an enthusiast in that
line, and many were tho stories aud hair
breadth escapes he related. 1 can well be.
licve he is a good hunter, as his lurder is
well stocked with flub, ftesh and fowl; his
wives were brown, fat and greasy; his
dogs, of which be had seven, were .all in
splendid condition, and that is more than
can be said of most Indian dogs. He told
us the peculiarities of each, and showed us
the many wounds they had received iu their
encounters with brum. Ho also showed us tho
hole where he buried the bears' heads, and
there must have been twenty skulls in it I
inquired of him why he did so, and he tcld
me: "Bear all same lndiau: by aud by he
go to the happy rooting ground."
As a host he is a prince, and right royalty
he treated us to all kinds of game put up in
Indian style. We had smoked porcupine
put up in seal oil aud one of our crowd who
pretends to be an epicure said it was de
licious; there were seal's flippers cooked in
grease, which were not dissimilar to pig's
feet; baked ground hog stuffed with mus
sels which gave the hog a fishy taste and
improved the flavor of the mussels. His
bear's head cheese was actually immense,
and there were many more dishes too
numerous to mention. He showed many
kinds of roots and herbs good for food and
medicine. He also showed his cmncU hal
ibut, hooks aud all of his dancing out tit.
His headgear and mask cost him fifty dol
lars; it was wild and uncouth, and was
t-arved out of yellow cedar. It badaiurfre
nose like a parrot's beak, eyes made of
mother -of-pearL a muatii which containut
the teeth of the only siwash doctor on
Noah's ark, ears made from the hide of the
ichthyosaurus, hair uiade from t'.te sea
lion's wuiskera. His hunting knile bad
tome unique carving on the hatnuie that
represented some Indian myth the bears
were afraid of. As a prosp.vloi, tiku ir.;r;:y
more following tlial vocal :us. J do novcoti
sider him a success, as we : -iamined many
places that be showed u. imt couitl six
nothing except white and u..rren quuru.
He had other places he wanted to show
us, and we would have gon with lusi. but
one of the party bad an acute attack of in
flammatory rheumatism. Tne native to!d
us the extent of his territory, and suid be
expected while men prospects g or. his do
main to pay him 12.50 per day lor bis knowl
edge and scrv ces. He said tlie mud and
water belonged to his ancestors from tima
Immemorial, and he inquired if white men
owning a simlar amount of land would al
low every body on 1L His argument brought
forcibly to our mind tho "bioated bond
holders" of America and the land question
that is now nutating the British Empire,
-where Lords, Dukes and Earis are holding
hundreds of nriies square that their auces
tors acquired by might while he claims his
by right The only difference I see between
them and this Indian Is that he will be giad
to see you bunt or fish on bis suppled
country, while if you caught a trout in their
waters or shot a pheasant in their woods
you would gel about five years.
The next day we traveled against a head
wind and a terribie rain, aud after getting
drenched to the skin we eumped. It would,
ue very pieasaut prospuoting- m Alaska
were it not for the rain, head wind and
ti lea, thick brush and niosciuitoes. and a
few other little inconveniences. Then,
again, if I was looking through a tourist's
eyes from the deck of an oceau iteuuiur,
how romantic the majestic mountains and
rivers, hundreds of mi las of pine-clad
shores, and every now tin d then a wt
glacier! Then in smooth, narrow channels
cau be seen too mammoth whale, forging
bis way alonfr nearly as fast as the sterner,
and every few feat can be seen the shining
silvery sides of a beautiful salmon, (lis
porting, or trying to escape from some
tinny monster who is trying to catch him
fora meal I saw a sea! gobUe one- in less
than two seconds To me the nnimais oo
such a trip remind oueoragrat mena.Tin,
without having to pay at the door, wbilo tiitl

ati'y of beans und bacon, a prospecting tour
