Morgan Wassom bas been pardoned
by Governor Lord, His time would
bave expired In the spring, by a par
don from ex-Governor Pennoyer,
which shortened his sentence to that
time. The weakening of tbe body and
mind of Wassom Induced the governor
to release him at once with a full
pardon. Wassom's family aud friends
were naturally delighted at his return.
We hope that nursing and care will
soon restore his mind and body, and
that be may have yet a long life before
him.
Kincald, our worthy secretary of
state, has shown himself to be an hon
est, courageous official, one who would
not think of doing a dirty trick, es
pecially when commanded to do so by
bis party's bosses. An attempt was
mode to keep the Bryan union electors
off the official ballot, on technical
grouuds; Mr. Kincald over-ruled even
the opinion of tbe attorney-general,
who is a rancorous partisan, and oertl-'
fled tbat names of all tbe candidates
for presidential electors in the field
should have the place which they are
entitled to. If the McKinleyites are
sure of the vote of Oregon as they
claim to be, why should they resort to

Two weeks ago one of John Dob
kin's children took sick with dip
therla but It bas entirely recovered
and is now out again. It is thought
tbe child caught it from a favorite dog
that the boy was with a great
deal. Dr. Booth, who was attending
the child, says be did not examine tbe
dog, but ordered it killed, and from
what tbe family said of It tbe doctor is
satisfied tbe dog had the genuine dip
theria. Dr. Lamberson says he dis
sected a cat a few years ago tbat had
genuine dlptherla and bad given it to
a large family, and the disease went
all through the family- All physicians
agree that diptheria can be carried by
dogs and cats, and our citizens should
be careful, aud if tbeir dogs or cats
show signs of being sick, kill tbem at
once.
TUlman and Pennoyer.
Senator Ben Tillman, of South
Carolina, snd ex-Governor Pennoyer,
of Portland, will both speak in Albany
next Saturday afleruon, speaking to
commence at o'clock.
Curiosity to see and hear Senator
Tillman, will alone take a large crowd
to Albany. The Bryan forces of this
city are making arrangements to go
down in a body by private convey
ance. Tbe arrangements now, is to
leave here at 8 o'clock, and drive down
to E. Keebler's, where they are to
meet a large delegation from across the
river and all go lu to Albany In a
body, The arrangements are for the
country brethren to furnish tie con
veyances as far as convenient, and to
take all tbat want to go down free.
There will probably be reduced rates
on the train to all who want to go that
way, Hop, H. L. Bur k ley and other
prominent speakers will be present.
Albany people say they propose to
make this one of the biggest rally
days ever held In the state of Oregon.

Disturbance the Depot,
Tbe disturbance at the depot, the
night of the McKlnley parade, was
disgraceful. There seems to have
beeu some bad feeling between several
Albany and Lebanon boys. . Some
bad whisky was drank by both sides.
This fact, with the bad feeling and the
lunate cussednessof some of these kids,
started a free fight. We are sorry to
have to say, that the fault seems to be
with the Lebanon boys. Rooks and
sticks were thrown at the receding
train and a few persons received pain
ful bruises. There are several boys In
this town, sons of respectable parents,
who thould be sent to the reform
school. They are a disgrace to the
town and a continual menace to tie
peace. The marshal will deserve the
thanks of the community If he will
break up this little gang of hoodlums.
For the good name of the city, we are
glad to know that this disturbance
had nothing to do with politics, and
was participated in mainly, if not en
tirely, by torch-bearers iu he Mc
Klnley parade.
There was some unnecessary noise
at the Academy grounds where the
speaking was had, and we regret that
It occurred. It wasaMcKiuley celebra
tion aud his followers should have
been allowed to make all the uoise. It
Is customary throughout the country
for tbe opposition to answer cheer
with cheer, but we hope that Lebanon
will be an exception to this rule, and
will always treat the other side, which
ever side that may be, with unusual
courtesy.

bonds of matrimony, at the residence
of the bride's parents, on last Satur
day, the 21st birthday of Mr. Bartley.
The happy couple have the best wishes

went to Portland this morning in the
interest of the mills. Mr. Kay reports
work progressing quite satisfactorily
In tbe mills. Owing to orders for
goods from this popular institution de
manding immediate attention, work
was resumed Booner than was intend
ed. Quite a number of persons are
now employed in lhe mill preparing
the wool for the more advanced pro
cess of manufacture. Mr. Kay thinks
that in the course of three weeks work
will be progressing In all the depart
meuts of the mill. This will be good
news to the many Sulemites who de
pend on worn in the mill for a living
