The populists at the St Louie
convention will endorse Bryan and
Sewell. There is a strong opposi
tion to the endorsement by the
middle-of-the-road populists, but
they are in the minority. Bryan
men are in control and have put up
Senator Butler as temporary
chairman. The convention may
nominate Bryan and Sewell straight
out, or may endorse them. The
kickers may put out another ticket
but there is but little encourage
ment for such a move, as the pop
ulists will go almost solid for
Bryan. With the endorsement of
the populists, Bryan's chances for
election are very bright and aio
Kinley's are correspondingly
gloomy. McKinley seemed to he
sure winner a month ago, but
things have greatly changed.
There is a tremendous revolution
going on in the minds of the voters
all over the nation. Devotion to
free silver and hatred of monopolies
are solidifying the masses for
.Bryan. Be is now the idol of the
people as McKinley is the idol of
trusts and monopolies. The people
will win, and Bryan will be presi
dent.
The Salem gold organ doesn't
want the workingmen paid in a
fifty-cent dollar, says the Journal
It wants him paid in the new dis-
pension dollar, the Carlisle, the
Almighty dollar, the great Jehotab
dollar that will buy two days labor,
and four bushels of wheat, and ten
bushels of oats. It is now buying
too much and crushing everything
beneath it. But it is to be Btill
more almighty. With 95 per cent
of all our wealth in property and
only 5 per cent in money, if that
money continues to appreciate in
purchasing power and to depreciate
all other property, it will gradually
and ultimately convert the 95 per
cent into the hands of the gold
holders, and in the cm thing, grind
ing process where will the poor
working man be? The almighty
dollar will eat him up and swallow
bis children for generations to
come. What the laborer and far
mer want is a dollar that will not
swallow up so much of tteir labor
and product. They want a dollar
tbat is easy to get, that is not so
scarce, so high, so dear, so almighty
powerful.. Let this government
legislate more value into labor and
quit legislating value into dollars.
Let us destroy the corner in gold
dollars by putting the silver on a
legal tender par with them to com
pete with them and bring down
their enormous appreciation of
value to a just ratio with silver

In response to an inquiry, the
director of the mint has given in a
few words certain facts relative to
the value of the gold coins of the
United States.
Any gold coin that has lost none
of its weight by abrasion or other
wise is worth its former face value
when melted into a lump. The
government makes no charge for
coining gold when the bullion is nf
standard fineness nine parts gold
and one part copper. When the
bullion requires refining, the
government makes a charge equal
to the cost nf the process, and
makes an additional charge of two
cents an ounce for the copper used
as alloy. The intrinsic value of
every gold coin is precisely the
same as tbat indicted by the gov
ernment stamp which it bears.
Free coinage of silver would
introduce precisely the same set of
facts regarding silver dollars. A
full-weighted silver dollor would
be worth a dollar when melted
into bullion. A worn dollar would
be worth only as much as the pro
portion which its weight might
bear to the original weight of four
hundred and twenty and a half
grains.
The difference between those who
favor and oppose free coinage is

that if both gold and silver were to
be admitted to the mint on equal
terms, both kinds of dollars would
still be of equal value. The "gold
standard" party holds that when a
gold dollar would buy silver
enough to make a dollar and a
half or more, silver alone would be
coined, and all who had gold would
demand a premium for it.
The silver men believe that
treating the two metals alike would
make their values not merely
when coined, but iu form of bullion
that which is fixed by the coin
age law. The gold standard party
does not believe that this would be
the effect.
Thi sound money democrats are
in a perplexing dilemma. If they
hold another convention and nom
inate another candidate, they may
indirectly assist in electing Bryan.
This course would divide the sound
money vote of the Eastern states,
while it would not hurt Bryan in
the Western silver states. On the
other band, neglecting to take such
a step would be a tacit indorsement
of either Bryan on one hand or
McKinley on the other, either of
which would be disgustingly dis
tasteful to a democrat who believes
the republican party is generally
unworthy, but that the mainten
ance of the gold standard is the
supreme duty of the hour. More
than this, inaction would yield the
party organization entirely to the
free silver element, and make it
more difficult for the party to pull
itselt back into the safe path again
when the free silver epidemic shill
have subsided. Which course to
pursue is a question worthy of the
matured judgment of the best
democratic leaders. Fur the pres
ent they can accomplish nothing
desirable; they must plan, work
and build for the future. Wel-

One decision of the United States
supreme court has attracted more
wide-spread interest than that de
livered by Chief Justice Bradley,
exempting canvassers, agents,
salesmen, etc., from all special,
state, county and town taxes. All
such special license or tax laws are
declared unconstitutional, and any
law officer who attempts to enforce
them is individually liable for
damages. Ex.
It is noticeable, though not
strange, that a number of Portland
democrats who- up till recently
have been solid for "sound money"
are now enthusiastically for "free
silver." They scent afar a possible
office if Bryan should be elected,
and, like a former Oregon states
man, the administration cannot
change any quicker than they can.

The most highly civilized nations
will not plunge into war on as
small provocation as formerly; the
policy of international arbitration
will gradually grow into more
favor; yet no nation will wholly
surrender its inalienable right to
go to war whenever it pleases.

It is said Senator Mitchell will
"come out strong" for McKinley
this fall. Very likely; the senator
has been a performer in the great
Republican circus so long that
possibly he can ride two critters
going in opposite directions, and
still maintain his dignity. Ex.
