The) election is over. The popu-
liats have gained the three most
important offices in the county,
the court, the clerkship and the
sheriff's office. With these offices
under their control, they are able
to put into actual praotice the
reforms that were so diligently
advocated during the canvass.
The main argument used against
the present administration was the
alleged extravagances in the sher
iff's office. The people must have
believed that such extravagances
in fact existed,, because the votes
ousted the present officials. They
must, also have believed that the
populist nominees would correct
all these alleged abuses. Will
they do it? That is the question.
' E they cut down these expenses to
the figures given on the stump,
4hen all credit will be due the
populists. If these or other ex-
- travagances are permitted, there
will be no excuse left the populists.
' They have made great promises,and
the people have trusted them. To
betray that trust will be to sound
' the death knell of the party.
The people have great expecta
tion of reform from the populists.
Just here, it would be well that
the people give them a fair trial.
Do not too harshly or too quickly
judge them. Give them reasonable
time to get used to their new duties
and then watch their official acts
and judge them honestly. They
cannot consistently ask for leniency
jjor they proclaimed their ability to
'reform these alleged abuses and
swore to the sincerity of their
intentions. We all understand
each other now, and the eyes of the
county are upon the populists. Bo
let them keep in the straight and
narrow path. ,
Speaking of Monday's election.
Ex-Governor and Mayor-elect Pen
' noser aaid : "Wages, prices, values
and the volumes of business have
all been reduced to a narrow gold
basis, but the- salaries of officials
and the expenditures of govern
ment have not been reduced and1
so our people re feeing ground to
poverty between the upper mill
Btone of high salaries and extrava
gant expenditures and the nether
millstone of low prices and stag
nated industries. I shall endesvor
to reduce expenses wherever I can
to meet existing conditions, and I
will now gay, what" I could not
well say, and what I did not say
before election, that while endeav
oring to faithfully discharge mv
duty as mayor, I shall take but
one-half of the salary. That salary
should come down with the de
cline of prices and values and
hall gee that it does come down

financial policy has nearly doubled
he purchasing power of his own
salary, had voluntarily reduced it
in conformation to the general
reduction of prices and values
resulting from the gold basis he
has forced upon the country, he
would have performed an act of
simple justice that would have
received the approbation of the
world."
A street railway boycott in
Milwaukee, Wis., is assuming such
proportions as to cause a loss of
upwards of 11,000 a day to the
street car companies, with pmB
pects of iits becoming more severe,
instead of lessening in the least.
The men who were in the employ
of the companies endeavored to
gain more favorable rules and a
better wage rate from the compan
ies and struck. New men were
put in their place and kept at work
under the protection of the police
force, made larger for the occasion.
The labor Unions declared a boy
cott, and Started bus lines in op
position, and to effectually have
they carried out their idea that lew
business men of the city have the
courage to trespass upon the wishes
or mandates of the union. " The
street car companies are now con
sidering the advisability of prefer
ring oharges of conspiracy against
the leaders of the several labor
organizations.
Sous of the local freaks of the
votes Monday in certain counties
are curious. For example, Linn
county gives Vanderburg nearly
1,100 votes more than Tongue,
while Lane county, adjoining, gives
Tongue a plurality of over 400.
In Linn, Myers' home county,
Myers gets only 442 votes, about
1 in 10, while in Lane, a republi
can county, he received 1,084.
Douglas county, too, which might
be Biipposed to beHermann's
stronghold, gives Tongue a hand
some plurality, "while Marion, sup
posed to be republican by l,GO0,
and Washington, Tongue's home
county, make about a stand off
between him and Vanderburg.
Welcome.
The Oregonian bus not made a
very favorable showing in its gold
standard fight. In the first con
gressional district the vote shows
almost a two to one sentiment in
favor of silver, while in the second
district, taking the vote of the four
congressional candidates, it is
three to one, Judge Northrup, who
represented the single standard,
coming in fourth best in the con
test. We hope the Oregonian and
its followers will realize from this
public expression that the majority
in Oregon are in favor of free silver.
It is now no longer a reasonable
doubt as to public sentiment on
this question. Dispatch- .
The majority of the clergy and
laity at the M. E. conference is a
good deal like the average senate
and house of representatives, which
remand the woman over and over
again to the whole of their constit
uency for a rehearing of their cases
because they are too cowardly
themselves to resume the responsi
bilities to which they haye been
delegated.. But the women ques
tion in the Methodist church, or
anywhere else, will never be set
tled until it is settled right. Paci

The Cottage Grove Leader says
that slander is a conjugation of
evils, the source of infinite mischief.
It undermines peace, saps the
fountain of friendship, destroys
families, rends in pieces the very
heart and vitals of charity, and
makes an evil man at the same
moment, the accuser, witness, judge
and executioner of the innocent.
Man may practice it, the world
listen to it, the devil favor it, but
God will judge and fearfully pun
ish it.
J. H. Albert, a Salem banker,
in commenting upon the election,
said: "If the democratic national
convention should nominate a gold
standard candidate for president.
and the St. Louisconvention should
nominate a man on the same plat
form, the populists would win
against the two candidates. I am
in favor of and will cheerfully sup
port a presidential electoral ticket
composed of two democrats and
two republicans." Ex.
The St. Louis cyclone is the
most horrible affair of its kind ever
happening in the world. Other
cities have been destroyed by other
means of destroyed by other means
of destruction, and other tornadoes
have swept just as violently as this
one, but never before has the fierce
and unrelenting tornado swooped
with such fiendish fury upon a
great center of civilization and left
in its path so many ruined homes
and so much misery and suffering.
Oreqon's governor is said to be
considering the advisability of call
ing out the militia of the state to
quell the disturbances along the
Columbia river. Tiere are some
islands to be looked after, if the
rioters are to be reached, and the
experience of the governor of
Washington in holdingSund inland
is yet fresh in the minds of all.

and all-powerful, however, than
