Ths county court has ordered the
route to be surveyed to ascertain the
advisability of opening this road from
Foster to Quartzvlllc, and have ap
pointed as viewers P. M. Smith, W.B.
Donaoa and who are to
meet May 12 at Foster. We hope the
viewers will report in favar of this
road. It's a public necessity, and will
result in great good to the county at
large. The road will cpeu up to and
iuduce settlements all along the route.

heavy grades and will lie far better the

THE CUMBERLAND PRESBYTERY
The Oregon Presbytery of tbe Cum
berland Presbyterian eburch which
met In this city last week, held a very
interesting meeting. Rev. W. V. Mo-
Gee, of Albany, was elected moderator.
On Saturday evening Ilia Christian
Endeavor rally was held and was well
attended. An interesting and instruc
tive programme was rendered, but on
account of tbe bad weather some who
were on the programme could not
be present. On Sunday Rey, Jones, of
Woodburn, preached tbe memorial
sermon of the late Hev. M. Hickman.
Sunday evening Rev. N. B. Beck, of
Seattle, preached tbe ordination
sermon after which Rev. W. V. McGee
in very solemn and impressive words
conducted tbe ordlnaiion service In
ordaining Rev. A. Melviu Williams
into the ministry.
During presbytery Rev. Williams,
on account of poor health and over
work, tendered his resignation to the
session of the Lebanon congregation
Ibe session declined to accept tbe
resignation and voted Rev. 'Williams a
vacation to extend according to his
option. Arrangements will be made
to fill tbe pulpit oeeaslonajly.

greeted by cheers snd laughter. Many
more songs, readings, etc., were given.
Tbe selling of the baskets consumed

$1 20, J. D. Fronk paying for tbe high,

$11 25, making an average of 68 cents
apiece. The auctioneer, Ed Allen,

eater." Finn Hansard took the prize
for being the most popular "ladies
man." He bought two baskets. Tbe
proceeds will either go to the school

for the school house.
