Bill Laugh and his two parlners have
been offered $10,000 for their copper
mine. Mr. Laugh refuses to sell at
that figure, saying that be wants $25,
006 for his interest in a mine that
assays from superficial rock $90 iu
gold per ton and from 40 to "0 per cent
copper.

Quite a large number of enthusiastic
democrats met Saturday night at
Unlou hull, anil formed the Lebanon
Democratic Club. B. O. Wallace Is
president, Frank Bkipworlh secretary,
and Root. Montague treasurer. Inter
esting speeches were made by several
numbers and much enthusiasm was
manifested. An active canvass will
lie inaugurated and public meetings
will be held.
A. H. Frum's little girl, about three
years old, was kicked In the forehead
by a horse last Tuesday, making a
frightful gash and breaking and In
denting the skull. Dr. Lambersou
was called and dressed the wound.
The doctor thinks it will not prove
fatal unless Inflammation should set
In, but it undoubtedly Is a serious
wound and the child will have a uar
row escape if It should recover at all.
Necessity now causes our citizens to
drink water, a fact that doubtless has
proven a great surprise to many an
over-taxed stomach. The saloon doors
were closed Tuesday evening, but how
long they will remain in this condition
is a matter that must be determined
at the polls. The Indications now are
that the action of the present couucil
in passiug a prohibitory act, will be

L. A. Wiley thought that we did
him an Injustice lust week by printing
the Bweet Home correspondence. He
showed us a recommendation from the
Bweet Home board iu which they
recommended him very highly both
as a teacher and a gentleman. He in
formed us that neither he nor Prof.
Bigbee had applied for, or wanted the
school at that place. We will state
that we had no Intention of doing
either Prof. Wiley or Prof. Bigbee any
wrong, for personally we are friends of
both and know each to be competent
to teach any school in the county.
A farewell service was held In the
county jnll Sunday, at 11 o'clock, con
ducted by the Salvation Army. The
corridors were tilled and much Interest
was taken In a service that lusted fur
about two hours. The prisoners all
spoke, disclaiming any purpose to guiu
the public sympathy, having learned
the little value tu he placed upon hu
man friendship, confessing the justice
of their being sentenced for the crimes
they had committed, but firmly as
serting their determination to live dif-

finished their term In the penitentiary,
where all expect to go this week. Al

The entertainment and musical con
cert given by the Lebanon Firemen's
Band, Tuesday night, was attended by
a large crowd. The music waa superb,
and showed that the member of tbe
band had taken great palna to fulfill
the greatest expectations of those pres
entand they succeeded. Two short
farces gave variety to the program,
and during the acting of these the
audience showed their appreciation by
much laughter at the comical charac
ters so well represented by the actors.
The hand boys are good actors and
good musician. The Lebanon Fire
men's Band "is all right" and no mis
take. During tile evening C. B. Mon
tague made a short speech, which was
listened to attentively by the audience
-as his speeches always are,
A landslide in a ravine of the Port
laud Heights, last Saturday, crushed to
deatli Daniel Campbell, age 42, and
Isabel McDonald, age 16. The house
they were iu, which waa the home of
Donald 8. McDonald and family, was
swept out of existence, and the other
members of the family narrowly es
escaped with their lives. Hundreds
of tons of earth swept down the ra
vine, and hardly before one coald re
allze what had come to pass, an ugly
looking mass of mud, rocks, brush and
trees marked the place where but a
minute previous waa the home of a
happy family. The cause of the land
slide was that last year when the
Montgomery-street boulevard waa be
ing improved, a large quantity of
refuse dirt was dumped in this ravine.
This was fully secured, as thought, by
a bulkhead, but a hidden spring of
water undermined tbe mass of dirt
and the bulkhead gave way. There
have been other landslides in that
locality, being of yearly occurrence.

cert was given here last week. We
were told the managers started the
song "America" and requested the
Siectators to join in, but not being re
inforced he had to retreat.
We wish to iu.form the public that
thc-e are one or two buggies, a hack
and a wagon in town, and several
"frames" to pull them. A certain
enterprising hack-man from' a neigh
boring village, we understand, in
formed his passenger there was no way
of leaving Waterloo unless his "carry
all" came after him.
The Durrant Case.
A dispatch from Han Francisco, dat
ed March 9, reads as follows:
'On April 8 next a year will have
passed since the murder of Blanche
Laiuout, and yet Theodore Durrant,
who was convicted of her murder last
November, is still in the county jail
waiting the action of the state supreme
court lu the oase. It will be remem
bered that immediately after Durrani's
conviction an appeal was taken, but
the case has not been presented to the
supreme court, owing to requests for
additional time made by both sides.
The last postponement took place a
week ago when the proaeoution was
granted 20 days iu which to file a bill
of exceptions. At the end of this time
it Is believed the cise will be presented
to the supreme court, but a decision is
not expected for several months,"

A Late Land Decision.
A decision has been rendered In the
case of tbe title to the large tract of
land In North Brownsville, upon
which Andrew J. Monk filed a claim
two or three years a.je. By an act of
congress Jan. 18, 18)5, the title to it
waa quieted and established in O, P,
Coshow and others. When Mr. Co
show made an application at Oregon
City his money was refused and the
papers sent to Washington. Now the
decision has been sent to the olllce In
Oregon City In favor of Mr. Coshow
and those he represents. Anything
else would have been an outrage.
The decision is that the railroad
company acquired no right to tiie laud
because, at tho time of filing the map
of definite location of the railway, the
land was withdrawn by the pre-emption'
of Richard Benjamin, and It did
not matter so far as the rights of the
company were concerned, whether
Benjamin ever completed title or not,
Then, as adverse rights were not in
terfered with by the law ot 1895, and
Monk maintained adverse rights be
fore thi passage of the law, It is held
that the purchase of the land under
the provisions of that act cannot be
permitted. As to tho allegations that
it was town prnpertv at the lime of
Monk's entry, and that Monk had not
complied with the law as to residence,
the local land office is instructed to
order a hearing. It is necessary that
the records be cleared of Monk's entry
before the application of Coshow can
be accepted. As to lots 3, 4, S and 6, it
is held that the recoid does not show
any claim to this at the time of the
railroad's selection that would exempt
them from the grant of the company.

odd advertising arrangement, which
be hopes to have applied to steamboat
whistles. It is a miniature calliope,
and instead of a tune It will slug nut
boldly, "Stop at the Cliff House," as
the boat nears the wharf. Already
a test has been made and its accents
may be plaiuly heard.
Tbe questionable Innovation in the
form of the sacred scriptures by the
Issuance of the Woman's Bible fur
nished a Connecticut genius with an
idea. He got out an illustrated edition
of the bible and made all the angels to
appear with black skins and kinky
hair, took the whole edition South,
where be is retailing them to the col
ored people at eight dollars each. The
original cost was about, one dollar each.
An enterprising London tradesman
undertook to advertise by telegraph
the other day, and sent to several
thousand prominent ladies a dispatch
to the effect that a g reat sale was iu
progress. The ladies have been accus
tomed to looking at telegrams as mat
ters of importance, and they were one
and all annoyed. When the merchant
got through apologizing to indignant
husbands, big brothers and audi, and
had paid for the insertion of not a few
abject apologies in the newspapers, he
had made up his mind that newspaper
advertisements were the best after aU.
